The Laois county board has sacked senior hurling manager Dinny Cahill after securing just a single win all year. Following a board meeting on Monday night it was confirmed that Cahill would not be offered a second year at the O'Moore County helm. Cahill, a Tipperary man, led Antrim to three consecutive Guinness Ulster SHC titles before taking over the Laois reins from the GAA's new National Hurling Coordinator Paudie Butler. His Laois team failed to win a single NHL game in Division 1, and finished with a score difference of -58 from five outings, before suffering relegation to Division 2 for 2007. In the Leinster championship the O'Moore men were knocked out by Offaly in the first round. They narrowly escaped the drop to tier two after registering their only win of the season against Westmeath in the qualifiers.

Rumours I have heard for his replacement include:

    1. Seamus Qualter - Westmeath Hurling Current Manager
    2. Pat Roe - Wexford Former Football Manager
    3. Combination of the two above
    4. Anthony Daly - Current Clare Hurling Manager
    5. Pat Critchley - Laois Ladies Football team Manager

Pat Critchley was snubbed before Dinny Cahill was appointed because he asked for structures and resources to be put in place...

Could you imagine this happening in KK or Cork???

I'm not surprised to see Dinny get the chop, Laois have been in steadily decline since he took over, although the county board undermined him early in the season.

I thought Paudie Butler was supposed to have put in place all sorts of underage structures in Laois?

Here's hoping they can improve soon but like Dublin the hurling in Laoise seems to play second fiddle to football.

In any of the counties with the potential that the likes of Laois has, it is far more than the manager that needs changing. With just a little more work, from all parties, Laois and others like them, could challenge the stronger counties. As it is they can put it up to them on their day, while still falling short of beating them.

Agreed, look at the way Pat Critchley was snubbed when he asked for proper resources and structures to be put in place prior to Dinny's appointment.

I recall that O'Sullivan, Castletown Club manager, was asked about his feelings following Laois' exit from one of the recent championships, he replied: "Well I'm glad, now we can get back to concentrating on the club championships"

Idiots like this should not be given ink space.

Not the first time I've heard rumors like that about Laois hurling, if there is a conflict of interests between the clubs and county it can't help.

As you well know, club v county is a problem in counties up and down the country. The further a county goes in the championship, the more of a problem it gets. It's one problem that is always hard to crack.

True but the less friction between the clubs and county the better things tend to go.

Cork and Tyrone seem to be able to run off their championships during their extended intercounty runs because people are pulling together.
