Frustrating problem

Computer's been acting like a dog these past few days. Really frustrating me.

After about 15 minutes online, the system seems to lock up for a second, the taskbar skips from the normal xp silver style to the microsoft classic style and disconnects me from the net:

    toolbarsv9.th.jpg

I’m in northen Ireland, using tiscalli broadband, im not sure if it could be a problem with the service, as the task bar locking up and changing style would lead me to believe it’s a problem with windows. I use XP pro sp2 btw.

Been trying to fix it for a few days, so i did an AVG scan and to my absolute horror found 10 infections (8 troj and 2 worms I think.) I was shocked by this, but after the items were removed the problem still persists. I think the system seems to disconnect when I open MSN, ive uninstalled it and re-installed it 3 times now, but there have been no improvments. It seems when msn is uninstalled, windows doesn’t fully remove the program, as any accounts that signed onto messenger before are still show up when a newly re-installed messenger is opened, is there a way to truly remove the program?

I’m stuck as to what to do here really, ive done an avg scan in safe mode, a bit defender scan, ewido, stinger and ad aware, some programs found objects but they were removed. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to fix this? I don’t get any error messages, which is unfortunate because that may lead to a clue as to the problem; I’ve a feeling it’s another virus.

Should I try another scan with something new? I did a system restore to a few days ago but no joy. I’ve also attached a log file after I ran hijack this

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Weemcd.

It could be that the virus, although now gone, has corrupted some system files. You could try doing a repair install and see if that helps. Boot with Windows XP CD, and run thru the setup. It will detect your current installation of XP and ask if you want to repair or replace it. Choose repair. See if that works for you.

    1. Build one of these.
    2. Reformat & Install Windows, amybe use this as an opportunity to throw on Ubuntu or something.
    3. Install your selection of AntiCockWare apps.

Your Hijack this log looks clean though but something must still be lurking for example a spyware service could have installed itself. It's unusual for something to knock off the themes service for XP as well.

Do a full system scan with Windows Defender (the default is a quick scan) same goes ad-aware and then top it off with a scan with spybot search & destroy.

Be sure to update all to the latest definitions before scanning.

After uninstalling MSN Messenger go into Program Files and delete the MSN Messenger folder and see if that gets rid of anything still present.

As for MSN Messenger that has been discontinued try using Windows Live Messenger instead (It's the same program just a newer version) also is UPnP enabled in your routers config ?
