Help getting insured on a classic..

Well, I have finally made up my mind that a clapped out banger will not do for my first car, and I've decided to get a classic/retro motor..

The only problem is, I can't get a quote on one! I've restricted my dreams to thatof max 1200cc and still, I can't get insured. This is driving me mad! I'm not into 'modern' cars at all, and would love a nice mk1 golf / vw bus (although it's a 1.6 I'd be willing to swap the motor for a 1.2 beetle engine) / fiat 126 or something along those lines..

Does anybody know of a company that will insure a young driver (18) on a classic car? I'm not even looking for classic insurance, just to pay the usual thousands they want for a 1 litre 'modern' bucket, but on something that's got less performance but looks so good..

    What exactly is the problem?

Should not be a problem getting regular insurance on an older car with NCT?

You won't get insurance on a classic until you are 25. Also many of the insurance companies will not insure on older (+10, +12, +15 depending on the company) years.

(as an aside perhaps we should make one of these threads a sticky, something like: "Classic car insurance for younger drivers"?)

My problem is that I can't actually get a quote on a 'classic', on a normal policy.. I know I haven't got a hope of getting classic insurance (whole other thread) but I can't actually get any quote on a classic at all.. Does anybody know of any company willing to quote me on one?

The best two brokers for classic insurance are First Ireland and Carole Nash (though I have my issue with CN). If they won't touch you no-one will.

As you know you won't get classic insurance at your age. And normal policies tend not to cover old cars so unless someone like Hibernian or Quinn Direct will cover you I think you're stuck.

    So I'm a little confused

    1:You know you can't get a quote
2:You want to know where can you get a quote

at eighteen you are not going to be quoted on a car that is classic, or even just old (15 years), sorry, been there, done that.

Isn't there a law stating that if you get refused in writing by a number of companies the first has to give a quote?

Basically, I can't get a quote, but was wondering if anyone knew any companies or maybe some 'tricks' to pull to get it (like putting a parent on the policy).. Looks like that ain't gonna happen!

    Cheers anyway!

buy a micra for €50, get a quote, insure it, drive it for a week, then change the car on your policy to the car you really want.
At 21 I had no problem putting a 20yr old car on my policy (I'm with Hibernian) And you should be able to get around it that way. The problem is that as a car gets older they are less likely to put it on your policy, you should be ok with a mk1 golf, but the bug or bus might be a challenge.

Why even bother first buying a Micra?

There are insurers out there who will insure an older car on a normal 3rd party policy (not classic) provided it's got an NCT, which is a reasonable request, Hibernian and FBD being two.

I had some bother insuring older cars before the introduction of the NCT. Insurers stating it had to have an engineer's report, etc. Since the NCT I have had no bother provided of course the car is NCT passed - it's legally roadworthy; there are no grounds not to insure it (though *you* are a different matter).

    Ring around some more.
