Firefox getting memory hungry?

I noticed firefox gradually slowing down lately, as in freezing for a couple of seconds from time to time. So I checked task manager and it was using 130mb of ram! Even as we speak, I just started firefox to write this and its using over 60mb. Should it be this ram hungry or do I need to reinstall it?

And the pauses are definately not to do with my machine, its a fresh install on relatively new laptop.

sound like you should reinstall firefox, While your at it i would do a spyware/malware scan, and do a thorough visrus scan. If you dont have any you can go to www.girsoft.com and download AVG free edition, and while your there you can download ewido, which is for spyware and such things. Or you could download spybot search and destroy.

As firefox shoule no be using that much ram, even with all the plugins under the sun running !

Shouldn't, but frequently does. Opera is the same.

Yea not unusual to see FF use 100Mb+. Currently mine is using 128Mb. Total System RAM is 768Mb.

Its not likely to be a viruscan or malware, FF does take a while to let go of the resources. Someone posted a program where you can set how much memory FF takes up. Try googling for it maybe.

Its one of the FF "features". :)

That is a nice little fix above.

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.memory.capacity
    & http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.memory.enable
Has anyone tried turning the "feature" off or setting a limit?

I found two more "fixes" (apparently)

    1. Set browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to 0
    2. Create new Integer in about:config called browser.cache.memory.capacity and set it to 16384

I used all three of these and my memory went from 128 down to 76.
