    When I first bought my macbook pro, I tried getting Windows Media files, and website streams to play. I did install Flip4Mac which would play the media files if I set Quicktime to work with Rosetta. I then installed WindowsMediaPlayer 9 for MacOS, and when I went to www.wlrfm.com to play their live feed, firefox asked if I wanted to open Windows Media player to play it, and it worked. In fact it worked fine. When I reinstalled OS X (just because I had not done it before) I went and reinstaled WMP. But I cant play back website streams. I then installed Flip4Mac and I am still not able to play back the website streams. Firefox hangs when trying to playback video streams embedded in websites, Opera does nothing, and both of them do nothing at all when I try and listen to WMA-based radio streams. This is really pissing me off, can anyone help? I'm running OS X 10.4.7

    First of all: Quicktime on Intel Macs does not need Rosetta - it's a universal binary as far as I am concerned.

    Secondly: Windows Media Player is... well, designed for Windows. The vast majority of Mac users (including me) does not recommend Windows Media formats in any way on a Mac, as it can lead to the results you're seeing right now. I don't know any other advise as get rid of Windows Media. Seriously.

    Or here's another one: If you need Windows Media that urgently, get Boot Camp, and install XP on your Mac.

    the unibin of Flip4Mac was only recently released, so make sure it's that one and not the PPC binary you're using.

    Dunno about your setup but I've an iMac G4 running tiger and have WMP 9 installed. Every other streaming player works except for that WLRfm link.
    Maybe WLR is only setup for windows?

    Get the latest version of Flip4Mac, which is a Universal Binary (version 2.1, I believe).

    Once installed, you should have no problems streaming Windows Media from sites. Works grand for me for vids from cnn.com and other sites, and I haven't encountered a problem so far.

    I also recommend getting the latest free RealPlayer as it's quite widely used, and (at least the Mac version, haven't used it on Windows for a while) works extremely well.

    @SystemError51:
    Firstly: I know Quicktime is Universal, I also use the latest version of it :)
    Secondly: Of course WMP was designed for Windows, but MS wants the world to see that it is happy to let other non-windows systems use its formats as well, in the hope that it becomes the dominant standard, which they can control.. sound familier? I have a few WMV files on my computer. I havent converted them yet because my PC doesnt have the power to do it without losing frames or someother problem. I cant convert them on the Mac because iMovie wont read files Quicktime cant. So I just leave them in WMV and play them with Flip4Mac. And there is also the matter of online videos. Most sites still use WMV, so you cant avoid it sadly.

    If I had my way, sites would be disallowed from using any proprietary format, so they would have to use an MPEG standard for the video and Ogg or MPEG for the audio. Every media player on the planet understands these.

    I use iSquint to change wmv files into mp4v -- great for loading the vPod with clips!

    Could the moderator ask for someone to put together a sticky on the issue of windows media on a new mac? With all these switchers (why can;t they all be nerds like me?) there's gotta be a good reason to do it. I'd do it but I'm a hurler on a ditch.
