gasket vs sealant

    Hi Guys!

Had the first major breakdown this morning. Crankcase gasket leaked and in few minutes I had all of the oil on the hardshoulder. Thankfully, it happend while I was at the traffic lights crossing N2 and stopped the engine before it was too late.
Had to drag it back home 6 miles. Good exercise :-).

The question is. Is it a good idea to use LOCTITE instant gasket sealant and fill the engine with new oil, or it's too messy and not reliable? I know in the long run the new gasket is the way to go.

The plan is to seal it with LOCTITE, fill new oil and ride to JP instead of spending 60 quid on a pick-up man to carry the bike over to the guys. I have a busy week and can't rely on the man to be on time to pick up my bike. But if the sealant is not good idea, I will try to get a day off.

Is it a good plan with LOCTITE?

The gasket goo stuff isn't really great for areas actually immersed in oil. The surfaces will have to be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly for it to work. Even then, I wouldn't recommend it, as the excess sealant ends up clogging narrow oil passageways or blocking your sump oil strainer ( = drastically reduced oil pressure.) I know personally of a few bikes with blown cranks as a result of gasket goo abuse.

A THIN smear of it is ok though on areas like camcover seals (rubber seal does most of the work and it's not immersed in oil) or alternator covers etc. Basically areas needing a seal but not under stress.

What bike is it and where is the leak? If you have Carole Nash insurance don't forget you have free breakdown cover.

Edit: if all the oil drained out in a short time then it's not really your average leak. Could be a holed crankcase, split oil cooler pipe etc. Post pics if possible.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

No, magic breakdown fairies realise when you're about to have trouble and dispatch a van to your location.

Oh, wait, no you have to phone the number they give you and give them a policy number (just like the AA) and where you are of course :D

You should have got a little credit card sized thingy with your policy with the phone number on it.

I work in Loctite at the moment and I know some of the engineering guys (bikers) post here. They would be the best people to speak to about the Loctite products.

Although for the life of me I can't figure out who it is and I'm not going down there and asking.

Try "Instant Gasket" instead of "Gasket seal". As far as I know that stuff will actually replace the gasket rather than patching it up.
