I presume it wasn't always like this but when did this problem start happening ?

At first guess it sounds like something is hogging the CPU in the background and that to me sounds like spyware so give the system a full scan with something like Windows Defender.

If Windows Defender gives it the all clear you could try re-installing the sound cards drivers - what make is it ?

What other programs have you running? Some system details would be good.

Its a fresh install of win XP Home, only apps running would be the likes of zone alarm, avg anit virus! The PC is the exact same way it was before the reinstall but never had this problem, i've installed SP2, updated soundmax drivers from Dell site and have lastest version of DirectX!???

Do you know if the make of the SoundMAX chip is of the HD audio variety as those required a patch from Microsoft to work properly under XP (or at least some of them did).

Have you installed the Intel chipset drivers ?

I had a similar problem, but only under Linux. It turned out to be the sound buffer.

Im not sure how to change the size again, but this fixed it for me.

Under windows the only problems I had with sound were driver related and the latest driver always sorted them out.

    Hope the buffer can help.
