Weights every day?

    Is it a myth that you shouldnt do weights for the same muscle group every day?
    Id rather do everything at once than separate groups on different days.
    Obviously if this is detrimental then I wont :rolleyes:

    Just like to hear some views.

    Your muscles grow while recovering. If you train them 2 days in a row, you are not giving them time to fully recover. Either train them every second day, or do a split (train different groups on alternate days).

    Just spotted this on the main page. I read a lot about the theory behind weights but don't do them myself, but what I've read pretty much everywhere is that overworking muscles eventually leads to your body reacting by slowing down or stopping the growth of those muscles.

    What would the side effect of that be? Strength gain only but no size?

    No gains. Your muscles will be too tired and worn out and you would probably end up lifting less after a while. Like TmB said, gains are made when you rest.

    No muscle gains, no strenght gains, eventually lose of strenght and lean mass, lower test levels, lower IGF-1 levels, lower GH levels, battered immune system, increase likelihood of illness........will i go on?

    In theory it could be done if the volume of work for each group was kept so small that you never over-trained. I wouldn't bother though - I think it would be (mentally) almost impossible to keep the volume/intensity low enough. I do know lots of people who do whole body workouts three times a week (I used to do this - not neccessarily the same exercises three times a week though of course). The trick is that the intensity for each muscle group is not as high as with bodypart splits so you don't cross over that threshold of negative returns (over-training).

    Sorry, forgot stomach/back.

    These I do each day anyway, I am not trying to build my stomach or my back in any way, if anything I want them smaller.

    You don't want an under-developed back, it will cause you all sorts of problems.


    I want an even back. Because of speed skating that I used to do, my back and stomach are different to the rest of me. When I first went to the gym I could barely lift some of the upper body machine weights on low, but I could do the back and stomach machines at their full weight. Which surprised me because I carry a bit of a gut.
    I want to look even not have a barrel.

    hi having trained weights for the last 12 years on and off ive overtrained now and again, with various side effects below,
    less is really more,
    your body is one system, training two or more days in a row is damaging this system as
    well as the differant muscles trained, take a day at least off between any training.
    Overtraining Syndrome - what most people are referring to when they speak of overtraining. It is characterized as a decrease in performance combined with stress-related mental and physical problems that can range in severity from mild to severe.

    This is the stage where excessive amounts of cortisol are released, which is actually the complete opposite of what weighttrainers want. It tears down muscle in the body, reduces protein synthesis, increases protein breakdown, raises blood sugar levels, reduces growth hormone release, weakens the immune system, disrupts sleep, raises blood pressure, and increases blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

    Overtraining Syndrome can take from many months to years for the body to fully recover. The effects of Overtraining Syndrome are listed below:

    Mild Effects:

    * Anger
    * Fatigue
    * Hormonal disturbances
    * Immune disturbances
    * Loss of appetite
    * Loss of motivation
    * Muscular fatigue
    * Sexual unwillingness
    * Short term insomnia
    * Tension
    * Weight loss

    Severe Effects:

    * Abnormal sense perceptions
    * Depression
    * Increased injuries
    * Long term insomnia
    * Long term muscle soreness
    * Muscle degeneration
