    Hi,

Has anyone here ever done the route 66 trip in North America from Los Angelus and if so was it any good, how long did it take and how much did it cost. Myself and my mates are planning to do it next March.

Much of the traditional Rte 66 is now by-passed by Interstate 40.
I have travel I-40 from Okolahoma City to Albuquerque, NM.

Central Ave in Albuquerque is part fo rte 66 and to be honest it's a dingy rundown kip. However around Albuquerque ther are a few things to see, the best being the Sandia Crest mountain which over looks the city. Old town and the rattlesnake meusem are not too bad either.

A few hours east of Albuquerque is the classicly named town of Shamrock, Texas, another old rte 66 stop-off.
It's named Shamrock cos the house where they loacted the post office in 1901 was onced owned by a Donegal man.
Not much to see there but they really make a big deal of the Irish connection, even though it probably has 0 people of Irish decent.

I'd get a good guide book before making the trip, i am sure that there are loads about Rte 66 on Amazon.
However the old rte 66 twons may now be quite rundown as a result of I-40

    Hi,
i have done much of the trip however you cannot stay on 66 all the time as parts of it don't exist anymore.
To be honest while it sounds cool to do this as a road trip you are better off picking your own route through the areas near the route - personally I would spend a good bit of time to the north of the route around Utah and Colorado and go accros to Chicago via Denver as most of the midlands from the rockies to Chicago dont have a lot to offer.
If you want to go from LA to Chicago you should consider going via, Death Valley (2 days), Vegas (2 days), Grand Canyon (1 day), Utah (natural Arches and loads of other parks - 3 days) and then through the rockies (3 days to do it right). After Denver you could pretty much drive non stop to Chicago in a couple of days. If you are staying in motels expect to pay about 100 for a room - some places are cheaper but sometimes you hit a town and all motels will be 150. I used enterprise car rental lasttime and they were best for dropping off in NY after picking up in LA. I think it was 1500 for a month. Camping is real cheap and you can buy all the gear cheap in Walmart when you get there however teh national parks get very busy in the summer. All the roads are good so you can almost always average 50-55 mph.
