would appreciate some advice on this.i start a new job this week. as if thats not stressful enough im in the process of buying a house. my mortgage provider requires that i get my "salary certificate" signed by my employer. its just a case of the employer signing a form to say i work there etc but is it unappropriate to ask that this be signed in my first week?
    cheers

Not really, it shouldn't be a problem. You will probably be in contact with whoever does payroll anyway, handing in a P45 / tax cert whatever so you should be able to bring up the topic then without feeling too awkward about it.

They've proberly been asked a million (perhaps not a million!) times before - go for it.

Nope. You're not asking for an elephant-ear on a bun or three weeks off to attend some music festival. Your request sounds perfectly resonable to me and your employer will probably think more of you for being a level-headed prospective property purchaser for it.

I wouldn't have even thought that was a favour, it's a part of life and TBH if your employer refused I'd be worried.

As would I. It would not bode well for your future job happiness if your boss was very quick to turn down "real and serious" requests.
