Villians...

    Bad guys...

You get so many in a hollywood film, monsters, funny bad guys, bad ass, plotter, mother nature.

But its a rarity when you actually get a villian.

Someone who combines, bad ass and plotter together.

someone to remind kids and adults alike that to be bad can be cool.

Over the years i could depend on hollywood to give me at least one Villian fix a year.

Last year Batman Begins gave me a lovely dose of villiany.

    But this year.

I'm seriously beginning to fall apart. We havnt had a single good villian this year.

Animated films, usually the great halls of villians was severly lacking, the closest we got to a villian was vincent the bear...who was a bad ass, but didnt plot much.

The action films were luckier, phillip seymor hoffman delivers a great villian in mission impossible 3 but he just wasnt given enough screen time to chew at tom cruise.

Crime films threw us the Inside Man...which upset villian fans because
the villian becomes the hero, thus he's not a villian

And then the comic book films. Surely they would deliver?

X-men 3 went the way of Revenge of the sh*t and turned Magneto into a cheesy crap villian (not only killing my buzz for this year, but also my buzz for xmen 2.)

And Lex Luther jumped the line into funny villian far too often...he just couldnt get the bad ass down.

The only other thing this year resembling a villian was Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean 2...the only problem is because of the films structure
ending halfway through the damn story
i cant really judge him as a villian yet.

Where have all the bad guys gone.

Where are my Oldman's Rickman's, Iron's, Vadar, Jefar, frollo, alien queen, t-1000 and so on...

I need a fix with a proper villian soon, they've all been sucky this year.

I agree with everything you've said, apart from Davey Jones. He seemed too sentimental at times for my tastes as a great villain.

We'll never have another Frank Booth, that's for sure. ;)

But it does beg the question, what makes a great villain?

Any enemy in an Arnold Schwarzeneggar movie... i know they don't exactly ooze menace, but at least you knew exactly what was what... no intriuge, no side-swapping.

Its simple...A villian is combination of the two most archtype of bad guys

A Bad Ass (ala wesley snipes in demolition man) Someone who can kick your ass either in character or physical form.

    and

A Plotter. Someone who's evil is alot more complicated and twisted then simple *i'm bad*

    lets see

Vader was a bad ass and he commanded a intergalactic fleet. (bad ass + plotter = VILLIAN)

Alien Queen was a real bad ass and she commanded a hive of monsters (bad ass + plotter = VILLIAN)

Jefar can turn into a bad ass snake and controlled everyone from the start of the film (bad ass + plotter = villian)

Scar kicked mufasa's ass and controlled the Hyenas (bad ass + plotter = VILLIAN)

    need i go on?

In my opinion, a really great villain is one that's played by an actor/actress normally renowned for playing, good guys/girls.

Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West
    Daryl Hannah in Kill Bill
    Denzel Washington in Training Day
    Robin Williams in Insomnia

The fact that Fonda always played an honourable, noble, all-American, blah blah blah character really added to the menace of his character Frank in OUATITW.
And Daryl Hannah was always such a sweet, innocent, cheerleading type before Elle Driver in Kill Bill.

One film I'm really looking forward to that has an excellent villian is Jigsaw in the film series 'Saw'. Part three out at Halloween!

Other than that I know where your coming from, I cant think of one memorable villian ive seen this year in the cinema that had me loathing them.

Im not sure he even died at the end of 2. I mean he kept saying that he was dying (re: illness) but i don't think he bought the farm in the film. Perhaps 3 will kill him off...

Christopher Walken. He usually plays excellent villians. I love his part in True Romance. Granted it's only about 10 minutes, but man, what a ten minutes!

The crew from Resviour Dogs were pretty cool villians also.

Alan Rickman in just about anything. He has the creepiest voice ever, it's like it's the audio equivalent of corruption and evil, lol!

"I'm going to carve his lungs out with a spoon", " why a spoon?", "Cos it'll hurt more!"
But in Robin Hood he was a very funny villian.

    Their more anti heros really.

For me, its Gary Oldman in Leon
Liam Nealson (spell) in Batman Begins
    Davied Bowe in Labyerint
there are many others. But I compleatly see your point of being let down this year. There really hasn't been anything memrable.

Christopher Walken, Max Zorin in View To A Kill.
    Gary Oldman, Stansfield in Leon.
Stephen Dorff, Deacon Frost in Blade.

And, of course, The French, in Monty Pythons Holy Grail! :D

Hannibal Lecter is the greatest villian, in my opinion. With the way that Crawford, Starling and especially Dr Chilton had been talking about him at the start of the movie, everybody would expect a brutally dangerous looking type in the cell, but instead when you see him, he looks quite the gentleman really. The menace was in his words; the way he broke Starloing down in that conversation for his own amusement, mocking her accent and such.

Again, when faced with the senator, a smart, powerful woman, he verbally tore her to shreds with no difficulty at all. And for no reason either, other than to show that despite incarceration, he is still a powerful force.

Not so good in Red Dragon, and terrible in Hannibal though!

I read the Hannibal trilogy before I saw any of the films and have to say every adaptation was disappointing. Hopkins does a good Lecter but there's so many more scenes/moments/interactions I would have loved to have seen him do as are in the book. In short, I never held Hannibal in a bright a light as many others do.

As mentioned above, Gary Oldmans character in Leon is an amazing villian.

Brian Cox as Hannibal Lector in Manhunter. He was far far better than Sir Anthony.

last villan to impress me was agent smith throughout the matrix films. great character development with him, and hugo weaving was perfect... took his experience over to V for Vendetta, even though that's sort of a "good villan" type of thing

Speaking of scary women how about Cathy Bates in 'Misery'. She was a few cornflakes short of a box.

I think Christoher Lee always does great villans. He was excellent in the Hammer films as Count Dracula. Then as Scaramanga in Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun. Saruman the White in The Two Towers. Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man. And last seen of course in Revenge of the Sith as Count Dooku.

Personally I thought the Penguin in Batman Returns was a great villian,
Completely deranged to the core (drowning babies)

Cillian Murphys a good villian in "RedEye"
    the warden in Shawshank
for pure evil Benoit in "Man Bites Dog"
    That Yelllow Bastard
    Robert Mitchum in "Cape Fear"

Kim didn't do much in SoaP though! 2006 hasn't been great for villains, so far.

Jack Nicholson as Joker + Sir Hannabil Lecter + Darth Vadar + Nurse Ratchet + Alan Rickman with just a dash of Gary Oldman = The Ultimate Villan

Art Malik in True Lies was a great villan.

Also Alan Rickman in Prince of Thieves, I'd like to see the scenes that Coster got cut out of it too.

Yeah I really liked the character in Manhunter , but it went down hill from there.

any david lynch baddie is a deadly villian

frank booth in blue velvet (probably the best - "its DADDY you f**k")
santos marcellos / bobby peru in wild at heart
None are as scary and evil as BOB in twin peaks though.

The proposition is chock full of excellent villians, but none are really "all-seeing / all controlling" - just harcore scumbags really.
