From a TCM perspective dry skin is casued primarily by heat in the blood. That said it can aslo be attributted to heat in an organ travelling along a particular channel, or the failure of the Spleen to nourish and promote fluid.

There are sevaral factors that can cause this, diet is a big one, but emotional states, wokr enviroment, soclai life, reaction to situational stimulous all cna have an effect.

As an Acupuncturist and TCM practioner I have a strange and unusual tendency to stay away from recommending any tradiojnal herbal treatments. The Chinese formulas are extremely effective for certain conditions but are, in my opinion far too strong fort eh western diet. We aren't used to eating the foods or living in the manner of TCM. As such I rarely advocate the use of herbs.

Obviously there are great beneftis but these can equally be attained through other methods.

If you'd like to pm me I have more questions I'd like to ask to try and establish a better diagnoisis. Please understand however that without actual taking a full case history and thourough examination I am limited in the help I can provide.

If you're in Dublin you can always drop by my clinic.

I agree. Drink loads of water. It definatly worked. Just always have a bottle of water with you and you dont have to be thinking about keeping a target of how much your drinking a day coz it just becomes a habit.

I have quite dry skin, prone to ezcema (that took a minute to spell!) as asthma runs in my family.

My advice would be that water dries out your skin so try to take short showers, under 10 mins, preferably shorter. Try to avoid taking long baths. Put body lotion on after you have a shower.

I use Eucerin 3% body lotion. It containes 3% urea, a natural moisturiser, present in the skin.

As for food supplements, soemtimes a lack of EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) can be part of the problem. You should try to increase sources of Omegas 3 6 & 9 in your diet through adding oily fish, walnuts and a few others (cant think of any other right now - check out www.whfoods.com). I mix linusprout (ground linseed) into my porridge in the morning and try to eat 2 portions of salmon a week.

    hope that helps!

Try "Emulsifying Ointment BP" which in my experience works.

Plenty of olive oil and excercise and sun on dry skin helps, an allergy test might help also too.

I have pretty bad dry skin as part of having excema and its my understanding that its down to a lack of a protein in my skin genitically, dunno if thats the case for you. You can though mitigate this by eating well and keeping your body in good health over all.
It boils down to why you have dry skin, all dry skin is helped by plenty of water and nice enviornment - Calgary is renowned as having a climate good for people with delicate skin, I'd add Munich in Germany for closer to home . Basically mountain dryish is best - less bugs, less pollution, less allergens.

The positive is if your dry skin is because of exzema - the protein is identified and a perminent cure is being worked on - but thats about 10 years away..but nice to know given i've at least another 50 years to go hopefully!!

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/
