NY at Christmas

I'm heading to NY for christmas, kind of a family thing, can't wait... somehow managed to get a bit of a deal in the Waldorf Astoria so it'll be a hell of time!

Anyway, I've been to NY before, lived on Manhattan for a few months, but that was during the summer time. I'll be heading over with a D200 and a couple of lenses, and I was wondering does anyone know of any nice spots for some photography in winter time? I'm praying it snows, I can see some serious opportunities if it does.

I would say any weather in NY would give good pictures, there is so much to see there. As you say though snow would be exceptional.

It depends on what type of photos you want to take. Either way you're not going to fall short of things to shoot.

There's the obvious Central Park and Rockafella Centre for the Ice-Skaters (very festive) and 5th Ave at night is nice (Christmas lights). FAO Swartz would be full of toys, kids, santas, christmas decor - lots of fun there! Then there's the East Village for good urban/street photography - Always something interesting going on there. Good views from Brooklyn Bridge also. Chinatown/ SOHO is usually well lit up at christmas time too. Times Square, Madison Sq Gardens etc etc... the list is endless!! :)
    Have fun!

Be careful of the cops though, they've taken a real dislike to photographers in the US at the moment according to some reports I've been reading

Interestingly I came across this link by chance on another forum, but it may only apply to
City Owned Property and not public spaces. But I've heard they can be quite
paranoid in relation to photographers - especially if you've got a large telephoto lens.

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/permits/still_photography.shtml
Use this form to apply for a permit for still photography on all New York City
property, except parks. Insurance not required. Please fill out the form and FAX
    it for review.

    Regards,
    Ciarán

cheers for that, read an article about it in a US photo mag there recently, they can get pretty heavy handed... they tend to intimidate first and apologise later it seems
