I'm having problems with a BitTorrent client. I need to open a port but I cant. When I foward the port as per www.portfowarding.com it dosnt help. However if i turn off the router ( Netopia Cayman3346 ) firewall its fine. Ovisiouly i dont want to keep it off.
This is probally a stupid question but can i turn off the firewalls for certain ports? Or does anyone have any better ideas?

    Thanks,
    Shane

P.S. I only use Bit Torrents for legal purposes, copyright theft is a crime and neither me or boards.ie condones it.

you can open certain ports on the router, so that they arent blocked by the router automatically. but from what i remember, its all covered here

i had problems with this as well. my old pc, with xp sp1, worked fine once i selected the right ports, but my newer pc, with xp sp2 didnt work. had prolems with the "security" that sp2 offered.

Thats what i done but it makes no difference, the only thing that works if turning off the firewall. According to Azureus I should be getting twice as fast speeds if i sort it!

What i done is changed my firewall settings to low and it works fine, it's a risk im willing to take.

I would go ahead and get SP2 installed like Kiith mentioned.

You don't have to pay for it but it includes a large amount of updates and security patches to fix those large holes in Windows. Afaik Microsoft are giving the CDs for free (not too sure), if not you can download it directly from the MS website here. As always backup before installing.
