Hard to tell you really, best to wait until tomorrow. Would at a guess say around the €1000 mark.

1000 euros is a bit steep considering my age, talking to the seller of the virago and he said the previous owner paided about 1000 first time 21 yrs old with a provisional license,so surely as he said to me it might be about 5 or 600 euros?.

    where are you living,
my fierst quote on a virago was 3,300 when i was 21 and provisional in dublin.
think the chap may be tellin porkies to get a sale.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 623 ✭✭✭hawker27

no porkies mate cause i have already told him from start that i would only buy the virago if the quote was reasonable as in 5 or 6oo euros.
i am living in kilkenny.i know it tends to be dearer if u live in dublin but i have no worrys in that respect.

what would yous say i would exspect to pay?.

i can insure a car for 1259 euros for the year.

You will only know tomorrow when you ring but be prepaired, your car experience counts for nothing, bikes < 250cc are involved in more accidents and you are on a provisional.

    Just a heads up.

i dont think it will be 5 or 600,
but as you living in kilkenny id say you may get 8 or 9.

im not sure if CN will quote you on a provisional.if you dont mind me asking,
what are you paying for the bike?

I had a 2002 125 Virago S. I went to Limerick on it and back. Not a sore arse but my arms and legs where killing me. Not the best seating position for long distance. That said, the bike can handel it fine. As long as you keep the chain lubed up you'll not really have a problem with it. However. Dont do a long distance untill you have the bike broken in. As you will be redlining the bike most of the way. There not the fastest of bikes... in any way :)

Still though, its a nice light bike to start off on. Can be fun if you let it.

got 2 quotes from carole nash and aon.
aon quote:578 euros third party only.
    carole nash quote:648 euros.

so i am happy enough with the aon quote, although not a lot in the difference of both quotes.
glad to hear the virago is good for lond trips, anyways i would be taking a break or 2 on my trip so the bike would have cooling down time.

fully comp is around 1100 euros.is,nt it ridiculous that the don,t offer fire and theft as well only third party insurance.

by the way whats the going price on 00 yamaha viragos 125cc?.

    Thats not bad quote. TBH

CN do TPF & T but maybe not for that class bike, ask them. Make sure you mention that you are getting quoted 70 euro less by AON as CN are notorious for not making much of an effort quotes wise unless prodded (sometimes with an electric cattle prod 10,000v etc).

Nice thing about CN is the breakdown cover comes as standard so they are not really the same policy as CN one gives you more addons, they also can cover you over the phone if you have a Credit Card or Laser meaning you can ride away immediatly. I stand to be corrected on what AON offers as have had little dealings with them.

Dunno re value though, anyone got an idea.

Welcome to the fun that is PTWs.

I'd say depending on the condition, €1000, to €2000. Sadly thy dont hold value well.

Congrats on taking the plunge, don't forget to do your lifesaver and get some training. POLICE RIDERS HANDBOOK is also worth a read, some good tips in there.

    Someone's 125 Dragstar for sale

This might be a possible comparision/option, though probably you have looked at a lot of them.

Well done on the new bike mate, sounds good, I'm into cruisers as well as scooters also. But about the helmets, don't you mean this the other way round!! "those closed up helmets" as you call em, "full face" lids will save your chin and lower face when you come off in the next 2 years....and trust me you will drop the bike, we all do at some point of our time spent motorbiking. (Could be just that you fall off while exiting a carpark even, or get nudged by another vehicle and loose balance.:D )

Try wearing a full face helmet for 2 or 3 weeks, you WILL adjust to the slight loss of periphery vision, and perhaps even the slight feeling of claustrophobia, but you will learn to turn your head more. This helps develop your emergency shoulder checks and will stand to you when doing your full licence test in the next year. Then wear that piss pot or "open face" lid that the previous owner gave you and I guarantee your face will feel naked and your head very unprotected. Don't forget about insects like wasps or lone bumble bees hitting your eyes at even 50kmph (iris damage anyone!! ) . Maybe your sunglasses will stop them, maybe not! Impact velocity ahoy!

...And then there is loose chippings thrown up by traffic. This is the "good stuff!" This will definetly get you! You'll get nice little pock marks on your cheeks if you're lucky as modelled by Harley drivers the world over. And your sunglasses will get wrecked, that's after you calm down from the excitment and shock of getting hit in the first place. (Okay full face lid wearers get hit too but have a better chance of missile deflection.)

Don't get me wrong, I have a open face lid myself for my vespsa, but it sits unused at the bottom of the garage. I always wear a full face, and I have a thing about glove wearing too...and more recently wearing boots on bikes.

Fcuk looking "Cool". end of story.

    Safe Biking!!:)

PS. Anyone else getting tired of seeing uneducated motorists like these on Irish roads this summer on their motorbikes and yes, scooters!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭Thinkingaboutit

    Are those cycling helmets?

    Maybe not.

Whatever they are, and looking at the clothes, those two are not too well protected. I suppose the problem is that summer sees a lot of inexperienced motorcyclists on to the road. I hope they gain experience, and come to see that motorcycles are practical as well fun.

I was thinking of the 125 Virago/Dragstar, but that would have meant going barely faster than I had been on my scooter.

Contact one of Aon's approved instructor and you will get some training and a short test which might cut your insurance (see here).

Directly from why CN didn't insure bikes less than 250cc, do they insure small bikes now? Haven't had to ask lately as I've a CB500S, group 9. Fecking robbery!

The OP got a quote from them so I guess that answers my question!
