Prob with Modem (drivers needed)

So my borther wiped his computer, i dunno how he managed it but he did. I installed xp pro on his pc, but now there is problems with the modem, the scanner, the audio controller and video controller (vga compatiable).

I know this as I chanced going to Add Hardware, hoping it would auto detect the modem (he needs the net badly). when I went into the the list of current hardware installed, those four [the modem, the scanner, the audio controller and video controller (vga compatiable)] had the yellow hazard icon beside them.

I also tried auto detecting the modem through Phones & modem options in control panel, selecting the com etc...but to know avail.

it needs drivers but I dont know the exact model of the modem, how to find it etc...he has no backup software, and the only information I can gather from the PC regarding the modem is that its a PCI Modem (from the the add hardware screen in control panel) which I know isnt enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope all above makes sense.

Install the chipset drivers first. Then it will detect the modem et al. Download the chipset from your manufacturers website or intel.com.

so its as easy as going to Packard Bell website and searching for chipset. This wont effect anythin on the computer already? What about the audio/video controllers and scanner - does the same apply?

    thanks irlrobins

yea they'll either be on PB website or if not and it's a intel motherboard you can get them from intel.com. If you're having probs finding, get back to us with model/make of PC and I'll locate.

Basically until the chipset drivers are installed, you won't be able to get devices like modems, video cards etc to function properly as the motherboard can't communicate with them.

I hate looking for modem drivers. Take a good photo of the modem, and use it as reference to look for the drivers. The modem chipset is what you should be aiming to get drivers for. That's if you have to get drivers elsehwere, before you go to his house. That, or bring a laptop with you.

okay, another stupid question(and Im a qualified software engineer!) , how can i find out model name of pc without any documentation or distinct marks on the PC? He knows the model of the scanner alright, but he cant find a way of finding the model name of the machine.

look at the back, or bottom. Prob has a sticker or barcode them might have model on it. Although they normally have something on the front.

The model number might be listed in the BIOS setup (F2, DEL key or something similar) at bootup.

Easiest way is to take the modem out, take a hi res photo for reference, and start googling chipset names. Those large builders buy in bulk, and the modems are often unbranded.

thanks explosive cronflake, but is there an easier way other than opening the thing up?

Cheers for the help irlrobins..managed to get internet going. Eircom dialup disc was the biggest problem. pages kept timing out when setting up an account.

Also I noticed one annoying thing. My bro was a existing customer with them, and when you select existing customer as apposed to new, you are told

you were on pay as you go package

    please select your package

alltime cost bout 30quid a month
alltime60 cost bout 20quid a month (i think thats what its called)
    alltime20 cost bout 8uid a month.

but no option or method to stick with the pay as you go option.

    *********************************************************

The only way I could get around it was to set up another user and go through the painful dialup signing up (which timed out several times). It took ages. When asked to "please select your package" the pay as you go option was there along with the above three.

Anyhow theres my mini rant at Eircom, robbin' fúckers!!

thanks again to all that helped

Just login to dialup using 1892150150 user: free password: free

Thats about as much signing up you should have to do. All other settings will be set via broadcast.

if you switch your phone to imagine, you get 20 free hours bband, self install,or pay 9.euro99cent,to imagine for full broadband .I dont know w the prices for dial up .

so I did all this for him, and it appeared to be working. Until he called me a second ago and said after one or two minutes he connects to internet (dialup) a message box pops up that the operating system (XP) must restart in 20 seconds....

    any suggestions?

I installed the motherboard driver, and the sound, graphics and modem drivers correctly (i think) and as I can remember the net was working okay before.

Thats a virus, and a pretty famous one, can't remember what its called though, but at least its easy to fix....just google it, should be able to find the fix no bother.

really? it was asking him to check some system file, he cant remember what. Its horrible trying to help someone over phone when they dont have a bulls notion themselves and you cant see the screen!

    I'll check it out thanks

Sounds like he has the blaster worm. Did you install all the patches/updates for XP for him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,890 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

yeah I did. Downloaded them off the HP site onto my pen drive and from there put them on his PC.

He had virus before he wiped the computer....it would say there was an incoming call coming in and interupt the connection, happened every 30 seconds. It was one of the main reasons why he wiped it.

any idea how I get rid of this worm?

is there no legitimate warning screen that says OP sys will restart in 20 seconds, could it be a prob with the drivers I installed (i hope not)?

There might be, but it's usually a sign of the blaster worm. AFAIK HP don't provide updates to Windows OS on their site. You need to go to update.microsoft.com to get them. If I'm right, then he's prob wide open to virus attacks. If I'm wrong, please show the link to the updates.

The virus may not allow you time to go obtain the downloads to fix it, so you can do the following.
Click Start->Run and type SERVICES.MSC and then OK.

In the right pane, locate the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service.

Right-click the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service, and then click Properties.
    Click the Recovery tab.
Use the drop-down lists to change First failure, Second failure, and Subsequent failures to "Restart the Service."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

What will the above stuff you explained do exactly Ruu?

sorry, I didnt install any XP patches for him, he wiped his pc and installed XP professional on it. I just put the drivers from HP for the sound, graphics and modem (which what the thread was originally about) on it.

It will try and restart the service every time it fails.

If that doesn't work, type "shutdown -a" at the command prompt. That will stop the shutdown.

You need to install the updates, otherwise you're just going to get infected again and waste all your effort.
