I was convinced to start playing warhammer by a guy in GW and I've always liked High elf models so I decided to start collecting them and wanted some advice on what units are good and some tips on playing them.

I know next to nothing about them high elves except that swordmasters and repeater bolt throwers are both excellent troops. And having nice blocks of spearmen reduces that horrible "I'm so outnumbered" feeling. Also my friend just recommended taking some fast moving units (cavalry, chariots I assume) to flank smash anyone your spearmen charge (or vice versa)

When I used to play back in the day, they were the worst army to face. Bolt throwers are a must and their archers can be pretty evil if there against standard units: empire, skaven, elves. All my armies got smashed by them except my dark elves.

The rule of high elves is their troops are deadly, but very specialised and often fragile. You can't usually go toe to toe, so you'll be outmanouvering and flank charging everywhere. You've got one of the best (if not the best) missile army there, so some nice bolt throwers and archers etc work well. Use big blocks of spearmen to tie up enemy units while your cavalry, chariots, other elite infantry etc smash into the side and wipe 'em out. Lastly, your magic deck bloody well owns.

Bolt throwers are a must. I've the bare bits of an elf army, its taking me ages to paint the damned thing.

    I plan to have the following in my completed army;
    archers (2 units)
    swordsmen
    spearmen (2 units)
    bolt throwers (2)
    2 mages
    silver helms
    chariot
    Prince-general

I'd also like a squad of dragon princes and a dragon

Heres my basic 2000 army draft:

Prince: Mounted, plenty of armour ward etc
    Army Standard: Mounted, magic banner
    2 Mages
    5 Silverhelms
    15 Spearmen
    15 Archers
8 Dragon Princes: magic banner + Prince & Army Standard
    10 Swordmasters
    Tiranoc Chariot
    Repeater Bolt Thrower

I added a few magic items to help them fight.
    Thanks for the advice lads

so you only have one unit of spearmen and one unit of archers? Is that enough? if so then I will scrape my plans of having 2.

Looks like a very mobile army I may copy it. Are your mages on horses or foot? I have two on foot and one on horseback (but I will only field two of them at once), is there any advantge to them being horsed?

Are those guys with Spears & bows any good? (I forget the name but I think they used to be sea elves in the first few versions of warhammer)

My Mages are on foot, The only advantages to mounting them is an armour save and there faster.

The guys with spears and bows are called Lothern Sea Guard, I don’t know what there like but they are dear enough (15pts each 16 with shields) and only have regular bows instead of long bows.

Here’s my army in full, I haven’t played with it yet so I don’t know what its like on a battle field.

Prince: Dragon Armour, Golden Shield, Vambrace of Defence, Barded Elven Steed, Pure of Heart.
Battle Standard Bearer: Dragon Armour, Barded Elven Steed,Banner of Sorcery.
Mage: Level 2 upgrade, Dispel Scroll, Ring of Fury.
Mage: Level 2 upgrade, Dispel Scroll, Silver Wand, Jewel of the Dusk.
5 Silver Helms: Heavy Armour, Shields, Full Command.
    15 Spearmen: Full Command.
    15 Archers: Full Command.
8 Dragon Princes: Full Command, Sword of Might, Banner of Ellyrion.
10 Swordmasters of Hoeth: Full Command, Amulet of the Purifying flame.
    Tiranoc Chariot:
    Repeater Bolt Thrower:

Yeah, Im afraid of two things putting one on horseback
    1. they will attract more fire
2.being fast wont help them (or will it ?)

can a mage on horseback move & cast spells?
I was thinking of having a level 3 and level 1 mage (but I suppose the level 3 guy would just get targeted more).

Is there any real advantage to having a Hero/Champion on foot, I know they could boost the unit they join but are they worth the points?
