Ok, you know the way 2fm djs do appearances at nightclubs, envelope openings etc. Do they do this as part of their employment with RTE or are these private nixers? If so why would RTE allow them to whore themselves out in such a manner?

It works both ways. A career on national radio might only last a few years, so they would like to supplement their income. I remember Bob Conway was always in situ in the Carraig Springs :) Make hay while the sun shines, so to speak.

The other way, it might pull in listeners if the DJ makes public appearences and holds down a gig in pub/night club

I'd imagine that a) it's probably built into their contracts that some outside work is allowed, and b) its similar to any other employer - once the outside work doesn't impact on their work for RTE they are happy enough.

    Don't really see the problem.

Lots of DJs that are on radio use the station name alongside their own when doing gigs.

Stations generally don't get a cut out of it - what's your problem?

Probably the fact they are using taxpayers facilities to further their private incomes... My maxim... if you are in the public service ..stay in the public service... if you want to go private ..then go private... don't mix it

You will find that most 2fm DJs are not employees of RTE and that they are basically working on contract.

THat means they can do whatever they want outside of RTE and the broadcaster can do nothing.

Gerry Ryan is an employee of RTE but someone like Shane O'Donohgue is not.

In fairness would a 2fm DJ make you want to go to a nightclub? In some circumstances it might guarantee to keep people away lol !

I remember electric eddie used to do stints as a DJ (prob still does) and it was advertised on the radio, FFS ! Electric Eddie ! Dreadful!

Does he still do karaoke? Years ago he was in a pub in Kells, it wasn't that long after his helicopter gig at 2FM.

What they do in their spare time should be of no concern to anyone apart from thermselves. Gigging is hard work, they wouldn't do it if they didnt need to supplement their income they deserve anything they get for it.

RTE jocks would be high profile so I doubt they would risk or get away with operating in the black economy. Most if not all would be booked through an agency and would go through the books.;)

That's really their own business. I'm sure the tax compliance within this sector is not much different to anywhere else. Mant broadcasters have rules about how their staff can do independent gigs particularly regarding the use of the station name.

People want personalities for their events so why not?
