Can anyone here recommend to me a good George Lucas biography.

What I'm looking for in particular is something that at least covers his PRE-STARWARS career (ie childhood, USC days, THX1138 and American Grafitti). I checked Amazon and he has a lot of Biogs already so I'm really at a loss for where to begin, but that's what I'm looking for anyway.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

I have read a few but the best one EVER is called Skywalking by Dale Pollock. It was written in 1982/83 and ends just before Return of the Jedi is about to open. Loads and loads of pre-Star Wars material. However, there is only a revised version (1999) available now and the post Jedi stuff isn't great but the pre-1983 stuff is really good.

A lot of the other Lucas biographies I read were useless trash. I hope that helps.

Thanks. I had Skywalking earmarked as a favourite because of its supposedly balanced presentation but I just wasn't sure how much of his early years it covered. You've convinced me now that that's the one to go for.

BTW, does the 1999 version still have everything the 1983 version had? I'm not to bothered if the revisions are garbage as long as the original stuff is still intact in there somewhere.

Yep, the revised version is exactly the same as the original up to a point. It's actually amazing how much detail there is in the book about Lucas' original vision for the Star Wars saga, considering when it was written. For example, one of the first characters he created was Mace Windu!

Anyway, it's well worth a read. The chapter about the making of American Graffiti is hilarious.

    Enjoy!
