Asian => American remakes

    Many classic (if they're old enough to be called that.. to me they're classics) asian movies are suffering american remakes. Examples: Infernal Affairs, My Sassy Girl, Oldboy...

    Anyone else think that this is a crime against cinema? A lot of these movies were heavily supported by a foundation on asian culture. It was this that gave them a lot of depth and meaning. I just don't think that this can be captured in an American film (esp by the like of Leo DiCaprio). These films were perfect as they were. I don't see the need to remake them.

    It's like making a remake of Gone With the Wind. You just don't.

    Sigh... Well there's my rant..

    No I don't think it's a crime. I mean no kidding here but from an artistic pov I reckon *at least* 95% of what comes out of Hollywood has absolutely NO merit of any kind nor does it contribute in any positive way to mankind so I'd start being concerned about that before I start picking on the just remakes in particular.

    I guess the thing to do is just don't talk about these remakes, don't attend a screening of any of them and just try your best to pretend they don't exist.

    I often find myself on both sides of the arguement. I can see why people would see it as sacrilege when their favourite films get green-lighted for remakes.
    I'm not against the idea of a remake, I always wait and find out a little information before I decide whether I'm disgusted or intrigued by it. (For example, feeling disgusted that the Oldboy remake was going to be helmed by the director of The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, while being intrigued that Martin Scorsese has remade Infernal Affairs with an impressive cast).

    I do have to say though, there have been too many Asian horror remakes in recent times. They have been churned out as if they were on an assembly line.
