Right so my current internal laptop dvd drive is fucked,
so i will need to buy an external one,
will an external one work for playing games on?
will it be slower than an internal one,
and should i get it in lidl/aldi the next time they do them?

I would imagine that it would work for playing games on. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't. I am open to correction on this.

No it shouldn't be once you have the correct speed you want.

Always go for an internal one if you can at all, no external power required and less clutter but an external one will work fine too.

Ya, i got 1 off Aldi. 320Gb, was 300gb when i converted it to NTFS. I only use it for music & data storage. Does the job for me. Dont know bout installin progs on it tho.

Edit. thought it was hd, sorry

    that's a hard drive you're talking about.

Yeah, an external will work fine.

I use both an external HD and an external DVD writer for most of my games. They do tend to take that bit longer to load, but it is certainly bearable.

I played Half-Life 2 from start to finish with the external drives.

You could buy and internal dvd drive for your laptop on komplett.ie, that one I have linked to is the only one on komplett I could find, they used to stock others.
I changed my laptop DVD drive a few months ago and it's going fine.
The standand dimensions for the drive are: 12.8 cm x 12.9 cm x 1.3 cm

There are many reasons to go internal one of which is price. You can get them for next to nothing these days.

is there any difference in reliability in internal external >? i have had to bring my philips internal dvd writer back for the 3rd replacement recently to pc world .... would be much happier with external model if it kept working !

Not really that much of a difference I don't think. Are they giving you a brand new replacement or a refurbished dvdrw?

Well yes because like any external device it is much more susceptible to damage.

fair point .... external would just sit on my pc and never move ... my experience has me thinking internal is just as likely to fail ... each time i returned it they took one off the floor and gave me a new one ... and checked the old one for obvious damage and fault ... they did not mind changing it ...

There's only one thing for it, have you an innie or an outtie belly button? :D

    (go with internal)
