My pc is a multimedia box. I mainly use it to surf the web, watch avi's and dvds, and listen to mp3's

For DVD viewing Dolby Headphone is a plus for me (using Sennheiser HD580) for sound as unfortunately surround sound isnt doable in the rented place I live.

Multimedia is the one barrior dumping Windows for me - Ubuntu is perfect , I just can't do Dolby Headphone - or can I ?

Have an Audigy ex so hardly rare sound card, is there any headphone conversion for AC3 in 'nix distros ?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

You shouldn't need to do anything. That sound card will be supported out of the box. I have some old creative 5.1 and it works a treat.
