12 new speed cameras will become operational on the Dublin - Belfast road as of this coming Monday.
    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=701038

The good news is that they will only be North of the border so us Nordies can still drive like f*ck on the M1 :D;)

Has anyone seen the new cameras on the M1 north of the border?
I believe they measure distance/time so theres's no slowing down for the camera and back on the gas again.
Heading to Belfast soon so anyone with any experience of these, i.e. location, speed limits, anyone you know getting caught etc would be useful

Yeah, this article probably refers to the sets of overhead cameras that have been installed recently just south of Newry before the border and at each end of the stretch of dual carriageway just north of Newry. I have read elsewhere that this is only the start of a pilot period and no one will be fined as a result of these cameras until they are fully operational later in the year.

But if you are from the South then there is no need to worry too much, you can take advantage of that lovely little reciprocal agreement whereby we can each drive like nutters in eachother's respective jurisdictions ;)

    Cheers El Tel
Thats cool to know those cameras are just trialing for now, phew.
Did have the pleasure of being pulled by the PSNI recently mind.
Was doing 55 (in second gear) in 30mph zone up the hill outta Newry....
Got a good talking to for that now.

Look out for unmarked red Mondeo (poss ST220 model) on M1 in the south.
    Been doing great biz lately!

Is it not just a myth that Southerners cant be done for speeding up north?

They can take as many pics as they want of your car but they wont be doing fock all with them cos they cant penalise non-resident cars, just like we cant penalise NI reg cars, EE cars etc

Yes we can - if we are stopped. The cameras cannot trace the owner of a southern registered car though.

I am about to head for belfast. thanks for the heads up. I can't be done for speeding up there? I can't get penalty points? is this true?

You could be physically stopped for speeding and given a fixed penalty AFAIK but you won't be able to receive points. Fines based on a unmanned camaras shouldn't apply either.

In the North there are many more Road Traffic Police than in the south, espically along the way to Belfast. My advice would be to obey the speed limits; there are extensive roadworks/contraflows and, in general, the speed limits are appropriate for the roads to Belfast from the South. On the dual cariageway (the A1) the national speed limit of 70mph applies, unless indicted otherwise. This catches many people out (esp. those thinking ~75ish is ok) as there are long stretches where the limit is in fact reduced to 60mph.

If they stop you and ask you to a pay a fxixed fine and then send it to your home address...woops you mark "not known at this address" and pop it back in your local an post bosca and problem solved ;) They arent gonna bother their arse trying doing anything about it. Id imagine they cant force you to pay an on the spot fine there and then either. Obviously the above is on the assumption that you werent caught speeding at 100mph! Because then they would prob just bring you to court

i don't think that i'll be doing the ton, Not gonna thrash my beloved renault! I could just correspond with them in Irish and just refuse to speak english. I'll prob be doing bout 65ish. So won't be going too fast!

    HI Lads,
Just receieved my 2nd fine in space of 1 year on M1 Santry..Apperantly it's on the direction to North from city. And it's within the 80km speed limit. So let's say from Tunnel exit to Airport.
BUt i don't think it's fixed camera as i drive evry day and drive and allways over 80 so is the other cars. But do you know where abouts these guards hiding in the bushes??with hand held camera??It's impossible to drive with speed at 80 as road is fine and all the car is overtaking you.Ridiculous!!Help

i reckon you got nailed by a gatso van. usuallty down there its a high body white transit.

stick to the speed limit. its not a race. let the person overtaking you get the points.

Thanks,White Van with no Garda written ok,,i got it...I will watch out.The thing is it's motorway and it's impossible to drive less then 80 unless you have car made in 60s.I think on this straight road with no corner and turn you should be able to do 120km throughout.Joke really..My mates form Germany came over and laughed to see a motorway with 80km speed limit. They said:It shouldn't called motorway!

its a striaght road with the majority of trucks trying to squeeze on to the m50 its 80 for a reason.

i have a 08 car and find it quite easy to maintain that speed.

It's recently been changed as well, the speed limit now drops from 80kmh to 60kmh after the Port Tunnel exit - probably because of the roadworks - the spped limit signs are really small!

It goes up to 80 again once past the M50 exit.

The Newry-Belfast road is the A1, speed limit is 60mph and there are loads of Average Speed cameras.

The (Enniskillen-) Dungannon-Belfast road is the M1, 70mph and I don't recall seeing any cameras,

A southern reg car can't be done for speeding by these cameras. As someone said you have to be stopped by a cop.

Yeah, to get home and tucked into all the cheap drink and food from Sainsburys and Asda, and try on all the cheap clothes from the Outlet in Banbridge.

They cannot presently add points. They can chase you for the fine, although presently they may not be bothering.

I noticed a red two windowed gatso van parked up in the centre of the motorway just outside Newry this morning. Is it Southern or Northern as I've seen it on both sides of the border?
