Inerview Query

Recently I went for a promotion in work. It involved a written examination and if you gained "x" amount of marks you were called for a compentancy based interview (A interview board consisting of 3 members). After which a "panel of successful applicants" was published.

I got through to the interview stage. On the day of my interview (usual scenario in a neutral venue) I arrived on time, neatly dressed etc etc, One of the interview board collected me at reception to bring me to interview room. On the way to the room he passed a comment in relation to the section I work in the comapny. Basically what he said was "what was I doing hiding there". Now I could have taken it as a joke but it was said otherwise. It certainly threw me a bit. Needless to say I would be asking for advise if I had made the panel but as you may gather I didn't. That bit doesn't bother me but I am wondering if I have a right for another interview? Or do I just let this one pass?

I don't understand your issue. What did you take his comment to mean?

His comment was in relation to the section or department I am currently working in at present.I took it to mean either of the following.

    1. I'm hiding in my current section because I'm afraid to work
    2. I'm shouldn't be work in my current section because I am better than that.

Obvioulsy he meant the first one since I never made the panel. I've looked for my interview notes but what I would like to know is have I got a case for another interview and should an interviewer pass such a comment to an interviewee minutes before the interview starts?

leave it go and learn from it

the comment which threw you might have formed part of the interview, although it will not be recorded anywhere, your answers might have helped at least one panel members opinion

    put it down to expierence

and best of luck at the next interview

I'm afraid it didn't as the interview was a compatancy based one. Basically all that can be asked is anything the interviewee talks about or the examples you set out in your application form.

I would interpret that as they were impressed by your test scores and whatever information they gatherd on you from line managers etc.

If anything it was a compliment imho and if you're looking for an excuse as to why you didn't get the promotion I don't think it's that and I would suggest it would be a massive error on your career prospects there to raise an issue with it.

Even if it was meant the way you percieved it, it shouldn't have thrown you. Get thicker skin.

The thing with competency based interviews is that they are a bit on the discretion of the interviewers in how the think you will be able to handle them. I remember my first one, they are pretty weird because they can ask you very varied questions from social interaction questions, personal skills and then technical relating to your application.

Depending on the size of the panel and the number of people being interviewed you might have just come under the standard of the last person on the panel.

Best of luck with the next one

Based on your clarification I'll second what Nick said.

I feel that you took what was said the wrong way & it may have affected your performance in the interview. It happens to the best of us.

    Better luck next time.
