No its not a thread in my own forum.

Its actually a question i want to ask...And i cant figure out which forum to put it into. obviously after hours would be a choice, but i need a sensible answer, so its less of a good idea. And then i thought, well all the mods are sensible and they'd probably could know the answer. And I dont think there's a rule saying mod forum is only for problems on boardsie, but more of a discussion place for mods. And with the recent changes in for sale, i have no idea where to put it in there.

I am in the middle of a transaction to purchase something (a camcorder) and the person i am buying it from portugal. Now what the seller is proposing is he drops it off in UPS and i will reciever a confirmation from UPS where apon i will send him the money via western union. Now i have only really traded with paypal before this, but i am unable to do so this time. So i am unsure about alot of this. IS there anything else i can do to make the transaction a bit more secure for me.I mean i trust UPS to confirm they are sending me a package, but i'd perfer some confirmation on the contents.

Online Buying/Auctions would fit this post best. :) An answer to your question would be to see if the seller would allow you to receive the package first and then WU transfer the money. Yeah for all you know he could send you an empty box. WU just rings the alarm bells for me, is this from eBay or some other source?

To be honest- it sounds dodgy as hell, if I were in your situation I would tell the person that unless he was willing to use an escrow service which would verify that you had paid the money to him but not release the money until you confirmed that you had received the goods- I would tell him that I was pulling out of the deal.

I've been in a similar situation before (with a wanker from NY who ripped me off) and would never put myself in the same situation again.

i have no idea how i missed online buying/auctioning if possible can someone throw it over to there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

I'm going to add my input aswell.

I would 100% avoid western union transactions with people I do not know.

If it's in terms that you have the faith that it will be ok, do be prepared for the worst.

Is this the type of camcorder that is too expensive elsewhere or cannot be sourced anywhere else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

I was in trying to purchase it from another source, where it was twice the price, but the seller was selling me one where the mic was gone and i had to replace the batteries and other periphals...the cost of replacing them would have destroyed any discount he was giving me. So i went back to searching. And i found the ad for this on www.gumtree.com, i thought the seller was in london, so i was going to pay in cash in person, but now she says she's in portugal.

I've emailed her telling her, I will pay a higher price (not by much but to cover the extra cost) if she agrees to use excrow with me. IF she's a scammer she'll pull out despite the incentive of a higher price. If not. Then i still get a camera alot cheaper then i will be paying if i went the other route.

Watch the customs duty on the item as well.:(

There shouldn't be any customs on items between EU countries.

well i got an email from her today.

She says she's already put the product into UPS...so i HAVE to pay. And that a confirmation should have arrived from UPS. Is this right? I mean she hasnt actually physically sent the product to me, and i cant verify it is physically in there.

She's ignored my request to do the process through an escrow service. but that could be because she didnt check email this morning before. But could be because she's a scam.

Actually the scam is looking very credable with the fact, her email address is bouncing back now, i cant seem to email her.

but that can be me...cause she's still emailing me.
    Dear Connola,

I want to let you know that in this morning i have depose the product to UPS. All is ok.. Now you will have to make the payment by Western Union on my name and address and send to me the confirmation that you done it. I will go to UPS, confirm to them that and you will receive your product.

Please understand me. I belive in you and i don't want to lose my product and my money.

    I wait your reply.

    Thanks

Check the header field of the e-mail she sent you and try to figure if the e-mail address is spoofed (as it seems to be) or not.

Unfortunately the age old rule applies- if something appears to be too good to be true, then it probably is.

If she has already sent the package by UPS- it should be a simple case of tracking it from your end. Its is a bit odd if she sent the package that she did not quote a UPS tracking reference number to you.

Wave goodbye to any money you send- do not even consider it.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Well if you can't contact her, what can ya do. Looks fairly certain now that something is wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

she sent me details of a control number...but it doesnt work in the ups tracking.

    Hang on and wait.
Worst case scenario is if she is actually genuine- then her money is a couple of days late.

Note: just because she sent *something* does not mean its videocam- it could just as easily be a brick or a hardback novel.......

    Exercise due diligence and caution.

Is there no way of getting UPS to check the contents of the package? I wouldn't use WU as there is no traceability (sp?) with it. Tell her you won't pay until you are able to contact her, or to allow you do a bank to bank transfer which will require her to give you her details in case it all goes pear shaped. I never use WU, I usually prefer Paypal, but as a last resort i'll use a bank transfer as at least it can be traced.

s there no way of getting UPS to check the contents of the package?

that is what i am wondering, could i ring UPS when the confirmation is delivered to me (thats whatwe are waiting on now) and ask them to verify that it is a camcorder in it.

As an intra EU package- unless they fear it contains hazardous or illegal material- they have no right/need to open the package.

Confirm that the number quoted by the seller is a genuine number first of all- and UPS may then be in a position to detail your options to you.

I think your best bet may be to hang on, and if the package is delivered as promised- then to make the payment to the seller (possibly give her a little extra for her inconvenience as an apology).

From what you have posted so far I would be extremely surprised if your camcorder did in fact turn up......

well it turned out the email bouncing error, was on my side. I dont know what caused it, but my hotmail account is not sending any emails.

I'm waiting for this confirmation. After which i will decide what to do.

    Litre of milk tbh.

If it smells dodgy, looks dodgy, feels dodgy then i'd error on the side of caution and say its dodgy.

Entirely your decision about how to proceed.
I stand by what I said earlier- the whole Western Union angle is ringing very loud alarm bells......

Just wait until you get it. When is the expected delivery date? Its up to you though.

they're not sending it until she confirms i have paid...which is more alarm bells

I've emailed her, again pleading for either we use a escrow service, or some other payment method i can trace.

    her reply:
    Dear Connla,

Like you saw, i am a serious person. I had deposed the product to UPS , now i just to confirm the payment to them for you can receive the product. You don't have to be worried, the product will arive to you in safe. If you pay today, Saturday you will receive it!

I hope you are serious too.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

yeah just wait until you get it. I was under the impression that this service was like escrow in that they where going to hold the package for you until you sent the payment, then they would dispatch the payment and package at the same time. Will you recieve the package before you have to pay? Then just wait. Ask to contact her and tell her theres been a delay

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

UPS don't deliver on a Saturday anyway and I don't think they hold packages and send them like she was stating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    UPS wrote:
Trough this e-mail we have the pleasure to inform you that your package has been deposited . The sender wants the payment confirmation to be sent to him .

Once you make the payment of the amout : 400,00 GBP we can deliver the package to your shipping address.

    Regards, UPS team.

she hasnt got back to me yet. But this is what UPS are saying. I wont see the package unless i pay first.

actully now that i think about it...it was pretty obvious...seeing as she told me she'd done the process this morning, then my email broke, so i told her to email my back up address (gmail) and then i got the confirmation on my gmail address when UPS should never have recieved that address.

This is her reply to me saying i am calling off the transaction due to her inability to provide any security

Take a look at gumtrees 'Warning' page:
    http://www.gumtree.com/warning.html
They've obviously issues with scam artists like that.
You should let them know about the seller too.

There are dublin/cork gumtree(s) so for irish items they may be the place to look - at least you can meet people/see goods, etc.
