Been using this site for a while now. You send the texts from their web site. When the receipant gets the text it appears as if it came from your phone and when the receipant replies their text goes to your mobile...

but you can send free international text messages from the interweb that will appear as though they came from your phone? assuming, that is, you're on vodafone, o2, three or meteor

erm no, your "free" webtexts are for Irish numbers only (at least on Meteor & O2)

erm no, the webtexts from o2 also go to international numbers.

I'm on Meteor, I should know! They are 100% not free.

aw yeah. i stand corrected. asked fella beside to make sure and he says no you can't anymore but you used to be able to. seems like meteor is the only one where you can't send free international texties then. you know, i'm nearly sure you can send free texts with some irc software.

Can confirm that O2 webtexts are definitly free for international recipients, I send them all the time, and the recipient has no way of knowing they were from the website (looks as if they came from my phone - same as to Irish numbers).

You can with ICQ, the problem is when the person you are sending the text to gets it, it looks like it came from some mad international number and not your own phone. When you send with smsgeezer, to the receipant it looks as if the text came from your own phone.

Afaik meteor customers on older tariffs who only receive 30 free texts a month can also text international numbers.

They can know .. it shows up as having come from +00353861234567 rather than +353861234567.

Just thought I'd throw that in :P

Thats true, but if someone already had you in their phone under the number "+35386..."(normal number) and you send a webtext, the text will come up as coming from you.

Some phones will read it as a different number ... seen it a few times ... but it's neither here nor there ;)

Most, but not all - I've had trouble in the past with some networks, such as Verizon in the US.

Anyone else think that's REALLY dodgy?

Texting to many international destinations is free on ICQ.

Well with smsgeezer you have to respond to a SMS message sent to the mobile number in order to set up your account, so you can only register a mobile number you own.

There must be a way to take advantage of the o2 free texts without being near a computer. A little java application that you can install on your phone that will simulate the web browser.

And I know that there would still be a cost (gprs) but I think this would be only about 1 or 2 cents.

Anyone know if this exists already. If it doesn't I might have a crack at making such an application.

good idea but it'd be fairly clunky wouldn't it? you'd have to open the java app, connect to the interweb, (should be able to automate username and password), would you have to implement your own T9 functionality when writing the txt? you won't have access to your mobiles phone book within the java app either, you wont have draft txt's, you'd have to go back out if you wanted to re-read a msg you were responding to.

sorry, don't mean to be rubbishing the idea. just think it might be a bit laborious to send a text. maybe when phones are a bit faster and are allowed greater permissions on the host phone it'll work a treat.

Indeed - the things people will do to save a few cent.

No problem at all. All criticism is welcome.
good idea but it'd be fairly clunky wouldn't it? you'd have to open the java app,
You could have a shortcut straight to the app. Might be almost as quick as normal
connect to the interweb, (should be able to automate username and password),
all the connection stuff would be done behind the scenes, user wouldn't have to do anything.
would you have to implement your own T9 functionality when writing the txt?
Nope, T9 would be there if your phone has T9
you won't have access to your mobiles phone book within the java app either,
Most phones these days support JSR 75 which does give you access to contacts
    you wont have draft txt's,
    This functionality could be implemented

Indeed - the things people will do to save a few cent.

You're absolutely right, it is a little bit tight (although I do tend to send a lot of international SMS, so there may be some saving to be made). Was just interested as a personal project as much as anything. Always like doing stuff that the company never intended.

well in that case, go for it!

i was looking into an idea for backing up your phonebook a few years ago but couldn't figure out how to get access to it from a java app at the time so forgot all about it. going to revisit the idea again i think.

i'm a java programmer too, dal (do flight booking engines and stuff so no j2me experience). but, if you're interested in getting a bit of help, input, testing or anything then pm me.

Thanks. I won't be starting if for a couple of weeks yet, but I will let you know how I get on.

Some guy on here wrote a j2se meteor version. He said it sends a lot of cookies, so I think the data charges might be more than you think, but I suppose for internationals txts it might win out.

    http://www.mackers.com/projects/o2sms/

    Already been done :)

A guy i know wrote an app for his Nokia Smartphone to access an app on his colocated box and that would call the 02sms script, which would in turn login and send your sms for you :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭dal

I have used that o2sms program in the past though I have to admit I didn't know that anyone had used through their mobile.

But it is still not exactly what I am looking for because:

    1. It is only for smartphones. Mine is a sonyericsson k750, which supports java. I would therefore be looking for a java app.
    2. More importantly, it relies on having a machine up and running all the time (without firewall issues) on which you can execute the script.
