hello i have been playing a long time now but i only ever seem to get a purple patch that does not last at all.i mean i could hit a 140 or 180 and next throw hit a 26 now that is totally terrible.

i often checked out big scores like 136,144,but then it could be ages before i would come near anything like that again.i have scored loads of 100,s.
have hit quite a lot of 140,s and have managed near 20 180,s up and down but there could be quite a long spell between getting the 180,s.

what i,m asking is how to maintain decent form as in hitting at least 1 treble 20 on every go.my finishing can be very dire most times to.
sometimes i could finish well but often its a load of darts to check out.

would appreciate any advice or help on my darts thanks.

You seem to playing longer and also are a better standard than myself but I play a few practicing games that mite help ya, as I have been told by a lot of pub players.........."Practice"

    1. For Finishing "The 170 Game": Instead of playing 501 all the time cut it down to 170, see how many darts it takes to finish 170. I play this quite a lot and find my finishing has improved!!!

    2. The Average Game: Play againist an invisible oppenent.
Both Start off with 501 or 301 - Put your opponent on a 45 average - so his scores will be:

    501, 456, 411, 366, 321, 276, etc down to 51, 6
You should be finished before he gets down to the 6.

Obviously the better you are, put the averages up!!!

I can't really help ya to keep the purple patch going as I find I'm in the same boat........sometimes I go home for my lunch and play brilliantly for 40 minutes, then I come from work and play crap......

As MBC has aid its all about practice. I have always been mad into my darts but only recently have I made a conscious decision to practice more and become better. I have gradually improved over that time as well.

The most important way is to play as many darts games as you possibly can. This doesnt mean competitively but even against a mate in your house or your brother, anyone really, because playing a game drives you on to do better.

The practicing methods that MBC said are very good. You should also play around the board, i.e. hitting the big one then 2 etc. and try so it without missing a single dart. This gets you better at playing the entire board and not just the 20 area. Another thing I would recomment is to make sure that you stand in the same position at the ache every time you throw. Obviously sometimes you will have to move if a dart is blocking you but otherwise dont move. This will get you used to how hard etc you need to throw the dart to reach the target. After a while it will become second nature and you will always hit at least near the target your going for.

Obviously always use the same darts, flights and shaft length as well if possible because changing any of these means you have to throw your darts harder or softer and so messing up your game a bit.

Hope any of that helps but the important thing is to just keep playing as much as you can and enjoy it!

    I do something similar.

I always practice using the 170 Game, but I limit myself to 9 darts at it. It puts you under a bit of pressure and it's worked wonders for my finishing

Also when playing 501 I start out with a 30 dart limit (you should get it first time around anyway) once you finish a game in under 30 darts, then you drop to 27 on the next leg. Once you finish that you drop again, to 24 darts. You get the idea. My goal is to be able to finish games in under 21 darts every time.

It's a good idea to keep track of your practice as well. Make an excel spread sheet or whatever and keep track of your average. You can then graph your improvement.

lads thanks for the advice, about three mths ago i was playing near proper darts in regard of scoring and hitting the treble 20 in a lot of throws, but i,m back again playin after a little lay up.

i also really really hate when i hit a treble 20 with the first dart and then the other 2 darts land in 5 or 1 this really annoys the hell out of me.

was playin last nite for a hour got a few 100,s and 1 or 2 140,s.
so i,m going back full steam at it will keep yous updated if yous like.
once again thanks lads much very much appreciated your advice.

Another game to play is "High Low" Played usually with 2 players, or 1 player and an Invisable player.

Each player has 3 darts to get his highest score - when playing High

And then 3 darts to get the lowest possible score.

Example: Score 0-0 (starting with High score first)
    1st Player 45
    2nd Player 60
    Score 0-1

    Low score
    1st Player 3
    2nd Player 15
    Score 1-1

Rule: If you miss the board on the High score = 0
If you miss the board on the low score = 20

This is a great game to concentrate on getting your highest score with just 3 darts, so you must concentrate hard.
Also its great for getting use to hitting low scores like 1/3/5 - for when you are playing a real game and need to finish scores like 17 etc...........nothing worse than haven't 17 left and you go for 1 then double 16.......only to hit a 20 or 18 with the 1st dart!

Oh yeah I also read about this game - is great for finishing: Pick you favourite double (mine was 16)
    Chalk the board/paper with:
    16
    1
    16
    2
    16
    3
Etc: till your at 16,25, 16, Bull

So you have 6 darts to hit double 16, then double 1, then back to double 16 and so on and so on............and if you hit the double circle it, it yeah miss with 6 darts put a line through it. This way you can find out what you worse doubles are so you can work on them. And also you will be able to hit your favourite double with your eyes closed.

Two good practice games I came across are as follows:

    100 @ 20s.
Throw 100 darts at treble 20 (or 19 if thats your favourite, or if the 20 is blocked). Score 1 point for every single 20 and three points for every treble (2 points for a double, if you're that lucky!). The aim is to get a high score and then try and beat it. The top pros would score in the 170 to 200 range. I've only recently started this - played it about 10 times, my average is around 90, but I did break 100 once (104) and was delighted!

    Double 27
You start with 27 points. First you throw 3 darts at double 1. If you get one double then you add the value of that double to your score (i.e 2 points), but if you miss all three darts you lose the value of the double, e.g.

score one double 1 - score moves to 29
    miss double 2 with 3 darts - score moves to 25 (29 - 4)
    score two double 3s - score moves to 37 (i.e. 2 double 3s = 2x6 = 12 additional points).
Go right round the board, finishing with the bull.
The aim of the game is to get around the board without your score hitting zero. If you reach zero then the game is over and you have to start again. If you manage to get around the board, then your aim is to beat your final points tally.

check your focus... sometimes trying harder changes your follow throughso your dart veers off at 1 or 5.. relax your throwas ther first when u get the irst 60 u change focus and pressure yourself... hope this helps...

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Dont practice enough.will throw a few days in a row and then not play for weeks.when i do i normally just play n01.doesnt lead to any kind of consistency.

Lots of good tips there though. Thanks lads.

My tips to lads out there would be some form of a practice regime and modify it so that you can find time every day or 2 to do it. longer you leave the gap between throwing the less effective it will be, thus is effectively muscle memory

First 10 minutes - Throw at the Bull, count the number of 25/50 you hit, beat it next session.

    Round the World big segments
Round the World doubles (i liked MBC's favourite double idea in between each one, might use that)
Round the World Trebles - T10 onwards

Then i would maybe do 100 darts at the 20's though i dont give 2 points for a double (i would consider a dart that high to be lucky and shouldnt be rewarded for it. So just the 1 point.

After that i would choose random numbers to throw at, throw all 3 darts at the chosen number, if i hit my target with the first dart, the second 2 i try to group right beside that one regardless of where it was in the target to improve grouping.

If i miss my target with my first dart i shoot the second 2 at my favourite double.

finally my only other tip is stop changing your dart setup, find a nice setup, something where the dart flies clean. throw it non stop, give it WEEKS to kick in, you dont just change your flights and suddenly become better, thats not how darts works.

Same Set, Same Shafts, Same Flights - Practice like crazy with the same setup, you will notice improvements over time

I've stuck with the same setup for 6 -9 months now. I've slowly seen my N01 average go from 50 to 60 to 70, now i vary between 65 - 75, slowly improving.
I've also started winning matches at players championships, all ireland champions, local tournaments, where previously i was struggling to take legs.

For anyone who has Dartpro installed on their computer the above game is Bob's 27 on it ;)
