I hope this is substantiated enough by now since several of their staff were in the Fitz tonight and apparantly the staff were all let go at 4pm earlier today and moving vans were in action today.

    No more Merrion Card Club/Casino.

    begorrah and begosh!
Seems very strange to me that a place like this would close during this boom in poker's popularity.

Yes, was in the Jackpot tonight and was told the same. All the regular games from the Merrion have moved to the Jackpot including tonights 100 double chance which took place with two tables.

I believe the Jackpot wasnt told about it until today as well as the 20 freezeout tourney was effectively self deal (well three of the participants got free entry in exchange for dealing for the rest of the evening)

Also I have heard that the Merrion is to be sold, I'm not sure whether this is just the property on Merrion Square or the name etc..

Well the Jackpot is owned by the same people as the merrion so it looks as if they just decided to downsize slightly.

Ah - the proverbial fire to match the smoke.

Bad news for a lot of people and a lot of reasons.

(And I got no souvenir chips. Pox.)

The premises there must be worth a fortune, & they still have a casino & card rooms at the Jackpot premises. I suppose the FAI will be in the market for the old premises or are both now sold, wern't the FAI trying to move out of next door recently.

Who will run the Orish Open now ????

I heard last night that the building the Merrion is housed in is owned by 2 English dentists and not by anyone connected with the Merrion themselves. This was being discussed at the hundred game and these guys usually have a fair idea on the poker comings and goings in Dublin.

Edit: I was wondering the same about the EPT myself.........

Yeah it's the same people. The Jackpot used to be an overflow for CCC in the days before Silks, SE, etc. CCC used to be the only place to pile into on a fri/sat night after beer. Was mostly only Chinese who were ever in the Jackpot though because that's where they set up the buffet of spring rolls, samosas, etc at about 1ish.

lol, we were all so earnest and upstanding back then. They don't make riled up indignation like that anymore.

The EPT is being run in the Regency Hotel this year and any mention of the Merrion has either been removed or wasn't there in the first place. The Irish Open is sponsored by PPP so that will also go ahead. Liam Flood I think owns the rights to the Open and I guess he'll use the same team as last year.

Sad news though, but inevitable I guess.
