for the past two weeks my girlfriend have been renting out a horror film from laser nearly every night. we've started with subtle sophisticated ones like The shining and Don't look know and descended into the likes of hellraiser 2 and American gothic. does anyone have any other horror recommendations. the more ridiculous the better, Although if anyone has any real gems they want to share that would be great too
    cheers

    The Descent

trust me, best horror movie in years

Also, I read the Hills Have Eyes remake is sposta be good, better than the original

The Descent is good - nothing new or spectacular - but very well done. Best I've seen recently are Rob Zombie's House of 10000 Maniacs and the even better Devil's Rejects. Be warned though, they are pretty nasty and not for the faint hearted. Seriously.

I quite liked House of Wax too, which although it had Paris Hilton in it and no new ideas, was slickly done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 gallagc8

yea,i saw the original of house of wax sans paris hitlon and thought it was ok,will definitely give the decent and house of 1000 corpses ago,saw the devils rejects, fairly grim stuff.

has anyone seen Last house on the left.
also saw it recently, freaked the hell out of me,apparently the ban on it (in england anyway) was only lifted 4 years ago

Reanimator, followed by Bride of Reanimator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

'The Thing', if you havent seen it, do yourself a favour and rent it nownownow! Brilliant. I would also echo others in reccomending the 'Decent'. The entire 'night of the living dead' trilogy is great, as is the remake of 'dawn of the dead'.

If you like blood and guts, it gets no better than Braindead & The evil dead trilogy. Both are fantastic. I would also highly reccomend a less known gem called 'Ravenous'.

No mention of "The Blob", think it was meant to be sci fi/horror. :)

How can you say its nothin new or spectacular?

Its one of the best horror movies ever made!

Also, Rob Zombie's flicks are just cheesy gore-fests IMO

Try and pick up a copy of a film called Demons

It's about a bunch of people who are invited to a screening of a horror film, they end up getting trapped inside as one by one they are converted into zombie/demon type things.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,221 ✭✭✭abetarrush

    Hmmm

Aparently the best horror movie ever is Psycho

    22. 8.6 Psycho (1960) 68,413

Highest rated horror in the IMDB top 250

[The Descent still Pwns it :p]

Agree with Demons. Also if you are into no-brainers I'd recommend The Relic. It has a monster, gore and cheap scares which all I want from horror movies. Would also go along with The Descent. If you want the spinetingler well it has to be The Omen. Even if you have seen this, get it out again;)

I have to agree with Dawn of the Dead the remake too. It's a very good and enjoyable film. So much better than I had originally thought.

I would perfer Hitchcockian horrors like the Blair Witch, Jeepers Creepers (for the first half, anyways), and Birds. Films which make your own mind the scariest thing possible.

    Hunting Humans.
    They Live.
    Videodrome.
The hills have eyes 2006(extreme - not for the faint hearted).

Reanimator is an over hyped pile of ****.

Switchblade Romance is nice and messed up. I also love Event Horizon. Its sci-fi but still pretty scary. Excelent acting in it.

If you liked Braindead you should get Bad Taste. Not as good but just as silly.

I liked Jeepers Creepers cos the ending was different, and likely
I just didnt like the way the monster was sittin on a chair in his workshop

    Anyone see Wolf Creek?

SWEET MERCIFUL FVCK! Its messed up! Scared the seisse outta me

Ridiculous horror films I would reccomend are
'Gothika' with Halle Berry- has a good twist and
'Wrong turn'- young people get lost in the woods and find a group of inbred cannibals...
'Rosemary's Baby' is also good, it's a great thriller

The Hills Have Eyes is pretty damn cool i have to admit!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

    Braindead... ridiculous horror,
taking the baby to the park and the mother... messed up

    and The Thing.

Evil Dead series!!!!!!! (2 in particular)
Second peter Jacksons classics, i thought bad taste is better actually, though both are fantastic.

Delicatessen isn't quite a horror film but its close, not to mention superb! By the same guy as Amelie.

Always seemed to me like 'the shining' in space. Good movie though. There's a movie that is on TCM a lot called 'Demon Seed' that's quite good and having just seen 'Wolf Creek' I would recommend it too. Kudos to whoever recommended 'Birds' and would have to put 'Rosemary's baby' and 'Wicker man' in there too. Classic movies in any genre. 'Idle Hands' with Seth from Buffy and Devon Sawa from 'Final Destination' is a good fun horror influenced by the evil dead.

You liked Wolf Creek? Jesus I love my horrors but I thought it was just plain rubbish. :o

Don't forget the classics though, Halloween, The Fog, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Nightmare On Elm Street for example. :)

    Yeah, was well creepy!

yeah, the originals, but the ORIGINAL originals, as in the 1st 2, and the last in the series

    Halloween 1, 2, H20 [and maybe Resurrection]
NOES 1,3, Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Friday the 13th 1-3, and Jason X for some comedy and closure

Was it Halloween II that had the 'Silver Shamrock' adverts?

    Three more days 'til Halloween,
    Halloween, Halloween,
    Three more days 'til Halloween,
    Silver Shamrock

When people saw the ad the masks would destroy the kids heads, turning their heads into snakes and insects

    That was ridiculous and boring.
    Anyone else think so?

That was the best Holloween film.

The bad guys were an evil Irish coproration who somehow managed to smuggle Stone Henge into the US.

    Ridiculous? Jason X ftw :)

You cannot get more ridiculous than some parts of that film. Most notably
Jason beating girls to death by swinging them against a tree by the tops of their sleeping bags :p

The Critters films are good fun. You can pick up all 4 in a boxset fairly cheaply.

Oh.. and you just have to love the Phantasm Sphere-set.

Cant believe no-one mentioned Leprechaun yet.
It doesnt get much more ridiculous than that, I thought it was hilarious. Havent seen any other than the first though, plus theyre always on the zone horror channel if you ave sky.

The Changeling is an oldie but a goodie, very creepy and weird. I liked The Devil's Backbone and Hills Have Eyes was really, really cool(the kid from HHE is also in the remake of Salem's Lot, might be on dvd, also fun to watch but not terrifically scary per se). I also really loved the Leprechaun series! lol! Lots of laughs and camp cheesey-factor fun. Have popcorn on hand to throw at the screen.

Good horror movies include the classics, Exorcist, Psycho, Jaws,Carrie, etc.. Ialso liked Cabin Fever, Nosferatu (original), Misery (ok, maybe not horror by definition, but there's scares and laughs for everyone--"I'm going to put on my LIBERACE RECORDS!"), The Others, most anything by Hammer Horror films is campy fun, The Haunting of Hell House is really fun, AMerican Werewolf in LOndon, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is great as is Night of The Hunter, there's tons really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,064 ✭✭✭Brow

On the subject of horror films anyone heard of Tarantino's and Rodriguez's double film 'Grindhouse'? It's a tribute to the cheesey horrors of old and it looks really good so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

Some really good films mentioned before, such as Evil Dead (mainly 2) which is, imo, the best horror ever made, The thing, The fog (origional), The Shining, Final destination trilogy.

However if you want to be scared. Very scared. Rent the ring. I still have nightmares. Scariest film ever.

Leprachaun 4: In SPace is so bad it's just plain terrible. Next time I try and watch it will be with a belly full of gin and see if the experience has improved.
