Considering buying my first classic car and I have a few questions...

I am currently changing my car and I am unimpressed with the current new/nearly new cars available and also the depreciation on modern cars. So I have decided to go down the road of getting myself a classic car.

The dream car would be a Maserati Sebring but since only 400+ were made there are not too many available and there is the small matter of the cost and practicalities of also requiring the car to fit the family in it. So my second choice is a 1960’s Jag, main reasons are as follows: availability of good stock from the UK, parts should not be a major problem. Nice family car. The model’s I am thinking of are the Mk 2 or the 420S.

    The questions I have are:

    - Would one of the restored and overhauled models that I have seen on the UK websites (http://www.roberthughes.co.uk/index.htm) be suitable for an everyday car? – I do around 10K miles a year and travel a short distance on the M50 every day.

    - I know it would be preferable to garage the car, but I lost my Garage to a utility room So would these restored cars stand up to the Irish weather (I live close to the sea)

    - Will a 1960’s jag depreciate much over a 5+ yr period?

    - Do I have to have a primary car insured to avail of classic insurance?

    - What would the expected annual outlay be to maintain the car?

    - I am better off picking up one in the UK or here in the ROI

Thanks in advance for the advice

    Ahhh, welcome to our world!

I've run classics as my daily car for almost 5 years with very little difficulty. My main car used to be a '67 Merc 250S (big saloon) which I loved but just traded up to one of my dream cars!

    Anyway:

    - Would one of the restored and overhauled models...

Def get the best car you can for your money (within reason). The car will deteriorate from teh minute you hand over teh cash so buy a good 'un for good money rather than a cheaper car in worse condition - it will work out cheaper in the long run. That said it would be a sin to buy a concourse car and subject it to teh M50 - a good original or well restored car rather than a show queen is what you seem to need. That site looks a bit overpriced btw.

My Merc had a 2.5L engine and went cross country on several occasions and had no issue with motorways, etc. A Jag Mk II (or Daimler 250 V8) would be an excellent choice and easily every day useable. I don't know the 420S but if you mean the 420G its a great car but HUGE and may not be realsitically driveable everyday.

    - I know it would be preferable to garage the car, but I lost my Garage to a utility room So would these restored cars stand up to the Irish weather (I live close to the sea)

Garage is obviously better (and may be a condition of the insurance) but you can put them out doors. Get it rust proffed and waxoyled and buy a good cover and you should be ok.

    - Will a 1960’s jag depreciate much over a 5+ yr period?

Depends on how much you spend maintaining it. It should hold it's value if looked after

    - Do I have to have a primary car insured to avail of classic insurance?

    Usually yes

    - What would the expected annual outlay be to maintain the car?

Depends on teh car, from a few hundred to several thousands.

    - I am better off picking up one in the UK or here in the ROI

Check out Carzone.ie because there are some Daimler 250V8's on tehre at sensible money but usually you will get better deals in teh UK. Logistically quite ackward though.

Any other questions just yell - you could also try the Jag & Daimler club btw

Buy the best you can get for the money, forget restoration projects unless you can do the work yourself and have the time and money to do it. Consider a Merc W108, great car and you might even find a diesel one, they come with powersteering and auto too and parts are available.

W108 were never delivered with Diesel engines. I know some guys in Germany who replaced the engine with a diesel engine but unless it's not a 240/3.0 it's not really fun to drive. Fintails W110 (190D, 200D) or /8 W115 (200D, 220D, 240D, 240D/3.0) are probably hard to find here.
