Sky Digibox setup

I have been given a Sky digibox (no remote or card) but I am not sure if it is workinng.

I have a FTA system operating on a 80cm motorised dish and I simply replaced my comag SL55 STB with the Skybox (Grundig) and turned on (with dish pointing at Astra 28.2)

The Skybox displays an EPG screen, but says that a satellite signal us not being received - is this normal without a card installed, or should I have been able to see FTA channels ?

I have no idea about the operation of the Sky system - any hints appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ger Roe.

    Ger,

As far as I know you will need to point the dish at 19.2 to pick up the Sky channels. It will load up the EPG as per the last card that was used in it. Channels you can get FTA would include BBC,ITV etc..

He is pointing at the correct satellite, 19.2 is what carried the SKY analogue service.

I have heard of some brand of digibox, Pace I think, being prone to suffering from tuner failure, and giving the described symptoms (sounds familiar?)

New to this myself, but you said you had a motorised dish and I think some of these are powered through coax cable -- diSeqc 1.2? am I wrong/right? If that is the case then the Sky box wouldn't be able to deal with it.

As I said I only recently got into this and it was through the gift of an old Sky ( Pace2500) box and dish, also origonally without remote,. It works just fine.

Try direct connection LNB to Sky box.

    Hi Dohouch,

The motor theory might be worth investigating. I can disable the motor control signal for Astra 28.2 and see if that makes any difference.

The box may be faulty in the end, the Sky system is a bit of a mystery to me, but I managed to set up my current FTA motor system through web board discussions - so it's worth a try.

If you move dish to 28.2 and view BBC etc on the FTA receiver, then the dish won't move when you connect the Sky box.

The dish motor only moves or consumes power when a command is sent. The Sky Digibox won't send any commands.

It may need a SW update. Check services Setup Signal strenght. If a signal then it needs an updat (hold backup on the box while plugging in mains till all the LEDs light up). If no signal then the tuner is dead. Esp if a Pace 2500 seriies.

    Thanks Watty,

    I'll investigate further.

The box may well be fried though - I have checked out various web sources and it seems that the Grundig receiver is very prone to PSU issues.
