Wooden first floor

In a new house (moved in eight months) with a first floor consisting of wooden joists, layer of chipboard and pine floor boards on top, should it "crack" when walked across? There are no specifically creaking floorboards but it does seem to "crack" when walking across it. The rooms below are quite large - 4.5m x 4m for example - so there are fewer supporting walls underneath than a smaller roomed house. Also, the impact noise from someone walking across with no shoes seems very high. Is this normal?
