Nikon D50 + 2 Lens Kit, good ?

    Hi
I'm new to digital slr photography world, considering buying the Nikon D50, possibly with the 2 lens kit,18-55 and 55-200, seems good value and zoom range for a beginner like me. Or is it better to buy the lenses separately ? If so , what lenses are recommended for general photography, plus the 50-200 type of zoom range ?

    Thanks.

Don't worry, the kit lenses will be more than adequate. Sure, you can get better quality glass by spending a lot more money and a useful site to check out some of these lenses is www.fredmiranda.com (see the review section). My advice is to stick to the kit lenses and if you really want to see a huge improvement in the quality of your images buy a tripod.

Consider waiting a couple of weeks since there is a new Nikon on the way and prices might come down a bit.

Don't get the 18-55 if you have a choice, not the best ever. 18-70 is by far more superior.

Doubt that the prices will change to be honest. Didn't happen to the D70 when the D50 was introduced.

Nikon seam to bundle the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses seperatly as a package deal for the d50 - i was looking into getting the d50 myself , still considering it along with an olympus e500 !

Never get the 18-55 if you have the choice.
    Its plastic :)

i've read in a few places that the 18-55 is actually better than the 18-70 in terms of image quality

Its plastic, therefore not robust. Also it only goes to 55mm.
18-70 is one of Nikons better lens

    Nope.
    Just no.
I have both lenses in front of me and has the 18070 on the D50 last night and its a million times superior,.

Got a price from jessops today for 775 euros for the nikon d50 with the 18-70 lens -- tried it out -- and i think i have been sold -- real nice -- what other shops would others reccomend in Dublin , or are jessops the best ?

In fairness to Ken Rockwell, he provides the advice for free. Some of it is excellent. Can't always be right though :)

There are far more reliable people out there.

    Look up:

Bjorn Rorslett (http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html, end of the page for the link to the lenses - one of the most knowledgeable Nikonians with an incredible amount of lenses - generally not 3rd party)

    Thom Hogan (http://www.bythom.com) and

    Michael Weber (lesser extent).

Also see photozone.de (variety of lens reviews including 3rd party).

    ######

My opinion? Get the 18-70 if you can spend a little extra - I've heard good things from the owners of that lens and the build quality and focus speed are supposed to be quite good. My 18-55 didn't get as much use as it possible should have - I fear carrying that in a bag. I've just bought the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 to replace it.

Conns (opposite the side entrance of brown thomas right?) have excellent after care... They clean your ccd for free (as many times as you want i think!) and give you a replacement camera while it's being cleaned... The d50 is around €750 there... Also if you need it repaired, they give you a replacement while you wait! Thats where I'm getting my dslr!

Have to agree, as an owner of the D70s with the 18-70 (28-105mm in 135 equiv) I find that the lens has good reach and is right on the 100mm (135mm equiv) focal length at the far end that's ideal for portraits, but the overall reach from wide to telephoto is excellent.

Also, because it's such a good all round lens you're less likely to get dust on the sensor due to switching lenses so often.

just checked and its 639 for the d50 and 18-55 lens .

i am nearly thinking of splashing out the extra few quid for the d70 and 18-70combo , plus 1gb memory, for roughly 950 euros from technikirect.de

For the one lens kit you'll be shocked to know it's actually CHEAP in Argos, Dixons and Jessops now. The price dropped quite a lot, pretty suddenly. Especially in those shops it was quite surprising. It's roughly 580 euro. This is not body only. It includes the 18-55 kit lens.

I'm not talking about the UK either. See the new Argos catalogue or pop into those shops.

Don't waste your money on the 2 lens kit from Argos (I think it roughly works out at 200+ euro for the 55-200, definately not worth it).
