Joining a Gym - Any advice?

I've read the sticky on the basics blocks....

Myself & wife are joining a gym next week. I haven't used one in 5yrs since we got busy having kids. Now they are at an age where we are having some free time in the evenings and my wife has given up work, so she wants to take them swimming twice during the week and once at the weekend. She's also going to be taking their aerobics/spinning classes in the mornings once the eldest goes back to school and youngest at montessori. I'll be trying to get there at least 2 nights in midweek.

I have my lunch in work, and normally home by 5:30. Going to try to go to the gym about 8'ish. Any advice on what kind of food I should eat to give me some energy for my workout? I don't plan on using it for bulking up. Basically to get fit, probably go for 30mins cardio and 30mins on the machines. I'm relatively fit, I'm lucky where I have a job where I am on my feet all day. I weigh about 13st for 5'10 and the odd time I use an elliptical trainer at home, but just looking for advice mainly on what kind of food people would recommend before going? I don't normally eat a dinner when I get home as I mentioned already I have one during work. Normally, have an apple in the evening with a yoghurt. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
