adding text info about a scanned photo to the photo file

I am currently in the process of scanning lots of old family phtographs and backing them up as digital files. I am looking for a way to save information about the photos, e.g. subject, time, place with the photo file itself. Tried an exif editor but as these are scanned photos they don't seem to have much or any exif parameters to edit.

    Any help gratefully accepted ;)

If you are using windows you could right click the file
And then go to properties and edit the summary of the file ?
