The only problem I had was when i tried to hire a twin engined Kart in new jersey, they wouldn't accept it, Muppets! Hertz had no problems with it when i hired a V8 thunderbird!

You don't need the International licence in Oz or NZ. Some states in the US do not recognise the Irish drivers licence best check each state website for requirements. If you go to the US you would be better off just getting the International Licence. Easiest option. Have driven in US using just my full licence but advised by State Trooper in NY that I should have the Int Licence.

Go to http://www.aaireland.ie/infodesk/motoring_europe/int_driving.asp to get the forms.

He/she didn't specify the category of licence they were concerned about. If they had a 'full' licence in A, A1, M, or W, I don't think they would be permitted to rent a car in Fiji. :D

I have found in general that the Irish licence is good everywhere. Those IDP things are a waste of money imho.

Best to bring an international one to be on the safe side. We've been to Oz/NZ and no probs using it there.

Well allow me to make it 100% clear.

With a full, clean Irish license that permits the holder to drive cars in Ireland (B I think is that category) you can hire a car in Fiji

And I agree that those international licenses are a waste of money, they are usually only useful in cases where your home license in not in English.

Oh, and I also had no problem hiring a car in NZ. (With a full, clean Irish license that permits the holder to drive cars in Ireland (B I think is that category))
