ok i was on earlier this week about a usb cable to transfer files..

    that didnt work

someone suggested a crossover cable... which i got from tech guy at work

i have been trying to set up the network

got the cable connected between the 2 computers
but you cant see the other computer on either one... only its own shared documents

i have put in 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2 on either one and tried connecting.. usign teh smae name for the workgroup.. and restarting as told... not working yet.. and the network connection indicates both computers are connected but not seeing each other.. i tried pinging one from teh other but no answer

    any ideas

Are the 2 machines on the same subnet mask? Have you enabled file and print sharing? Have you tried mapping to the other PC instead of going through My Network Places?

Might seem obvious, but always worth mentioning the obvious! Do you have a firewall on either machine?

Its definitely a cross over cable?

One end should be coloured (looking from the underside) :

    OrangeWhite/Orange/GreenWhite/Blue/BlueWhite/Green/BrownWhite/Brown

    And the other:

    GreenWhite/Green/OrangeWhite/Blue/BlueWhite/Orange/BrownWhite/Brouwn

I ahve found these problems always seem to stem from the firewall.

goto command prompt on both pcs and type
    ipconfig /all
and post up what you get on each computer here
Also disable norton or mcafee firewall and also windows firewall maybe
