Ok... mods, apologies if this is in the wrong forum, please feel free to move.

I'm looking for an application that manages the sharing of files at LAN parties.

Instead of people (lets say 4) all downloading off 1 machine (machine A)and getting really slow times, is there a programme which allows 1 person download, then a second one off machine A, while person 3 downloads off person 1's machine B?

    hope this makes sense...

    thanks

torrents should do it say if you had one machine hosting a tracker

What you have just described is bittorrent.

Get everyone to use uTorrent, it's a single .exe file with a built in tracker. Designate one machine to be used as the tracker and have everyone create torrents of what they want using the designated machine as tracker.

You could even get everyone to create a torrent of the entire hard drive that they want to share, uTorrent allows for selecting specific files from inside a torrent.

You may want to watch out for how badly this will take down the network at the LAN, if there are numerous switches with only a standard link between them it won't take long for the network to grind to a halt...

If all the clients are 100mpbs and the links between the switches are 1000mbps doubt it would be too bad though.
