    Hi,
    I'm 24 years old 5ft 10 / 11 and i'm about 9.5-10stone in weight (smoker).

Considering my height i have been relatively thin for a few years and this is down to general unhealthy living and it makes me look and feel a little unhealthy and unfit and to make matters worse my apetite for food is generally quite poor and this definitely doesnt help.

I would really appreciate a basic guide for someone in my situation, for putting on weight firstly, and then keeping toned.

I have just joined a gym with excellent facilities and would love to sort out my gaunty face, skinny arms/wrists and legs and maybe further down the line chest and stomach.

Any hints or basic guides as to how to sort out my physical appearance would be greatly appreciated...

    Yours in skinnyness Craig

Gaining weight provides your body with more mass to have to supply blood to.

As a result of the decreased amount of oxygen reaching your organs due to tar blocking your lung's alveoli your heart has to work harder to do the same work non smokers heart does.

As a smoker your heart is already under pressure and at the moment pumps with more force than it should have to.

This kind of pressure coupled with excess weight, which your not meant to have being honest, will cause strain on your heart and most likely eventually lead to a cardiac arrest causing you to die.

    Which is nice.

Hence why you should not try to gain weight until you stop smoking.

I do agree entirely with what you're saying, and i know this is makes no odds but i dont smoke very much (never more than 7 in a day) and i know this is seven too many but i am trying to quit. But i am very thin and play football regularly so when i say weight gain i'm talking about skin and bones being the starting point.
I really just want some tips for a starting point to a regime which will help me look healthy and will include me giving up the smokes!!

Quit smoking, then have a look at this.

And to save Dragan time, www.crossfit.com ;) (Just put it in your signature mate!)

By the way I smoked 30 a day for 5 years up until 6 months ago. The only reason I was boring enough to post anything related to smoking is because the effect it has on your organs is unbelievable. I can't imagine what life would be like if I was smoking again.

Well I'm a bit of a tank. I used to just lift heavy and ignored cardio and all that but now all I want to do is cardio for some reason. I'm guessing the following is true.

I'm a fast twitch animal, designed for strength and sprinting...Its hard to go against that grain, as I am finding myself. I look at weights and I put on muscle but I struggle with fitness.

Your a slow twitch animal, designed for long distance endurance type stuff...You will have a hard time gaining muscle/weight but will have no trouble become fit.

Of course you can successfully gain weight. The best way to do it is by working out according to whatever advice here people give and also eating like a horse.
