Doctor help

Okay, this isn't exactly a medical issue. More of a doctor issue.. i shall explain in a minute.

A friend of mine is somewhat sick. But the thing about it is that she doesn't actually have a GP whatsoever, and has never been to the doctor before. Because I have never gone to an appointment bar to my own GP or college doctor, I am unsure of what she is to do.

I would like to exhaust all other possibilities before advising her to go to the hospital, as it might be a case that she doesn't need to.. depending, of course.

Any advice with regards to around the Galway area would be helpful.

basically what I'm asking is this; can you go to any GP even though it might not be your own GP. If not, are there any medical centres that might help.

    Thanks.

Yup you can go to any GP. My boyfriend recently moved to Dublin from Limerick and when he was sick recently he went to the doc in my town. There was no problem.

Some GPs are have strict appointment systems so make sure your friends rings first to check or otherwise she might get turned away and told to come back later/ tomorrow etc. Some have open (walk in) sugeries at certain times. I know the one (can't remember his name) in Churchfields clinic in lower salthill has an open surgery from 8 - 10 am every morning. That's not much use to you now today but worth bearing in mind.

I need a GP myself in Galway, so after this we're both going to get one. My own family GP is back at home, so its not much use to me. Tried getting in contact with a medical centre, but they're not taking in any patients. And probably the sooner the better with getting some sort of treatment, so we're going into casualty. Probably no need to, but no other option. Thanks for any advice.

If it's a once-off sickness, try Westdoc (Liosban Estate) if you don't have a GP (after hours, costs a little bit more, number in the phone book) - instead of going to casualty and clogging up the system even more!

Some GPs don't take on new patients, so you might be ringing around a little...
