is this thing the reason that boards.ie is about to go to sleep in a few mins? Closing time, so to speak?!

    Good morning, and good night!

It is indeed, but as you can see 45 mins later and it's business as usual.

Yes. Some people tend to think that 5am may, in fact, be a better time to shut down for 20mins.

But nobody listens to those people.

    :(

    i agree.
sometimes (by that i mean once every two months) i stay up and watch live wrestling and update those on the wrestling forum as to what is happening.
i haven't done it a while though because of the 3am backup (the shows run from 1am to 4am.)
sometimes i'll stay up on a monday night and watch RAW live. that runs from 2am to 4am and the 3am back up really pisses me off.
i'm throwing my hat in for the 5am back up vote.

Ok,I have kept out of this debate thus far.
But with the hot weather I find I am up until 4am/5am and the 3am back up is a right pain in the arse.
For those people who are night owls it is too early.
4:30am would be better as it alllows the site to be back up at 5 am for those who are up that early and want to log of before thier commute.

So could some consideration be given to moving the back up to 4:30 am please ?

What channel is wrestling on? I havent seen wrestling in, well a long time.
Any of the guys from ~5 years a go that I might remember still around?

On-topic, please dont change the closing time. I really dont want to stay up til 5am, the 3 o clock shutdown is the only thing that allows me to be remotely functional during the daytime. :D

Heh, that just doesn't work for me. I don't like being told what to do.. when the 3am shut down comes along my brain gets into stubborn mode and I'll be damned if I'm not sitting here the extra twenty-five minutes to read page 2 of that thread I couldn't, honestly, care less about.

    Stupid stubborn brain :(

Some of Ruu's best posts occur at 4:30am ;)

You should do it in the style of ITV years ago; national anthem at closedown, station theme at open-up. :)

    i concur.
if you're up at 4.30, then you are up to no good and shouldn't be visiting boards.

    any word on this yet?
wrasslin' starts in 35 minutes and i get very agitated if i can't do two things at once.
my tv is 35 degrees to my right and i just turn my swivel chair back and forth between the pc and tv.

    this 3am nonsense must cease.

Yeah i find it really anniyign when I'm working nights. The backup should be done during lunchtime when everyone is off eating their food.

Also boards is slowest at around lunchtime aswell, (The gnomes that operate the website must have a lunchtime too). So having the backup at this time will cause the lease amount of disruption.

    Backup at 1pm FTW!

Backup in computer engineering refers to the copying of data so that these additional copies may be restored if the originals are damaged or lost, a process which is known as data recovery or restore. The "data" may be either created data as such, or stored program code, both of which are treated similarly by the backup software. Backups differ from an archive in that data are duplicated rather than moved.

Noun phrases with the modifier 'backup' are used in such versions as backup copy, backup software (the applications that are used for performing the backing up of data, i.e., the systematic generation of backup copies), backup policy (an organisation's procedures and rules for ensuring that adequate amounts and types of backups are made, including suitably frequent testing of the process for restoring the original production system from the backup copies).

A backup should be planned carefully, and the following points should be considered:

    * Periodic backups improve data recovery reliability.
    * Automated backup should be considered, as manual backups can be affected by human error.
    * Making two copies of backup can potentially increase security for data recovery, to avoid accidents such as fire and physics randomness.
    * Using standards make them easier to recover, since that's the goal of a standard. Established standards are usually safer for recovery.
    * New standards are generally faster and more powerful.
    * Data compression might be important if there is more data than media space.
    * Uncompressed data are mostly easier to recover if the backup media are damaged or corrupted, unless individual objects (files, folders, etc.) are compressed separately. Many backup programs allow an administrator to increase or decrease the scope of solid compression to tradeoff compression performance against durability.
    * Backups might take a lot of time to accomplish, which can potentially become a problem in a work environment. (The amount of compression can also affect the time required to perform a backup or restore.)
    * Multiple media backup, for just one content, can be done with independent indexing to optimize individual data recovery.
    * Backup depends both on software and hardware and so are exposed to expiration due to time issues.

The nature of computers is that there are always options and usually three points to consider when buying equipment: size (measured in bytes), rotational speed (measured in hertz or other cycles such as RPM), warranty (measured in years or eventually months).

    * Each of the different media has benefits and drawbacks. Also consider the cost per gigabyte when comparing different solutions.

Preparing checklists for worst case situations is a strategy that may well alleviate a condition that on the face of it looks hopeless.

The more important the data that are stored in the computer the greater is the need for backing up these data.

So there. We all know. :)

I think the 3am backup time is fine. It's often my signal that I must go to sleep now. If it were any later then I'd never get up for work.
