If you get a new motherboard and its not the same motherboard as your using now, You will need to reinstall if you want your machine to work properly. IF you are very very lucky you might not need to reinstall but i think it be best as the drivers wont be the same and will cuase a unstable computer.

Your Ethernet might be still ok just something has gone wrong. You can always uninstall the driver for this and reinstall and c if it starts to work again. Get the driver cd that came with the motherboard or visit the web site of the manufactory of the MB and get the driver there.

    my ethernet hole

I'm sorry but that just cracked me up.

Anyway, you could just get a plain old network card and try that. I'm sure someone would be willing to give you one.

Actually i went from an MSI NF4 SLI board to an Asus crossfire, and windows loaded perfectly, just had to remove all chipset drivers. however you will have to re-register your copy of XP. I did full install anyways but just to let you it can work.
