    Has to be AMD with Conroe out? You've got more money than sense! :)

    It's not really. When you start adding every thing up. I am thinking of 7950gtx 1gig ram. That alone will eat big time into budget.

    Just in time for the AMD price cuts too! lol you'll get some fierce machine out of that cash man. Do you want to go Ati or Nvidia? Try this website, http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php they always have good stuff plus its nice to browse and see what you could get. Ebay will be your friend too, you could currently get 2 Nvidia 7900 GTX's for bout €900 (drools....) if you went for sli.Make sure you back it up with a powerful PSU,I currently have a Tagan XEye which is very good but browse www.komplett.ie too for some ideas.You could "boy Racer" it up a bit too with some led's,cold cathodes,raptor hard drives....etc...*looks for credit card*....must..build..new..rig....

    Tbh after quite a few years (not a fanboy of anybody)

    Intel>Amd

    Conroe is a better buy, since with a 7950gtx will be cpu limited.

    Case=Lian li pc2100v
    Cpu=Conroe
    Gfx=7950gtx
    Mobo=?
    Ram= Drr2, latency doesnt matter
    Hd= 75gig 16meg raptor, 400gig storage
    Monitor=Dell 20inch widescreen Lcd
    etc

    It'll beat the dayligjhts out of any AMD, and there pretty cheap. Have a look at the Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 on Google. The 6700 is also available, but I think that the price difference is a bit steep for the extra ooomph.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭f1refox

    Yea just had alook at the E6600 nice specs. I see what you mean about price between the E6600&E6700. I think i will have to change my thinking as far as cpu goes.

    I wouldn't get a 7950Gtx, they run really hot and support is spotty at best.

    Wait a few weeks the 1950XTX should be out very soon

    E6600 is some performer for the price. Where ya bin for last few months. :eek: Gigabyte seems to be the best performing mobo (for clocking conroe) there are only a handful to choose from for a start. Need good quality ram also (PC6400 for a good 1:1 clock)
    Dont go 2 big on gpu front cos dx10 is just round the corner.

    Can't really wait a few weeks. I need to be up and running within the next two weeks. So i think i will take my chances with the 7950x2

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

    Are you planning on oc'in it? Ready to start my own build as soon as conroe comes. This is my spec:
    Processor:......Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 1066Fsb
    Mobo:...........DFI Infinity Socket975x PCI-E DDR2
    Cooler:.........Zalman CNPS59500 Led Cpu Cooler
    Ram:............OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 EL XTC 2048MB Kit, DDR2 800Mhz (4-5-4-15)
    Hdd:............2x Seagate Barracuda 120Gb SATA2 Raid 0
    PSU:............OCZ GameXStream 600w SLI ATX2.0 PSU
    Case:...........Thermaltake VA8000SWA Armour Aluminium Super Tower Silver
    Soundcard:......Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty
    Fan Controller:.SVSilverstone Silver Aluminium Controller (BB-002-SV)
    Also Dvd-Rom, Dvd-Rw & Floppy
    Working out at around E1700, but there's some stuff you mightn't need, like cooler, fan controller or soundcard.
    Already have 7900gt so sticking with that for the moment till i see what comes out.
    Most parts bought from OCUK & Komplett. Changed my mind on ram at last minute so i have 2Gb PC5400
    667mhz for sale if you interested.

    Wait, are you buying two of those things?

    There is NO support for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭f1refox

    conroe is here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Intel_Pentium_Core_Duo2.html ;) . Yea i have soundcard & power supply.

    Quad Sli is not supported yet and anyway conroe mobo's only support XFire not Sli so 2 7950's wont work. What size psu you got? Does it support sli.

    He isnt, the gpu name actually has x2 on the end of it. Doesnt mean he is buying two of them, or that there "dual core" :D

    No just the one :D

    Well after reading about the Conroe chip for the past hour. I think i will go with the E6600.

    So i need motherboard
    ram
    cooling?
    Harddrives (I am thinking Raptor)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

    Nice :D Read reviews to see how good the airflow is in it. I dunno much about it.
    Are you gonna oc or run on stock?
    Gigabyte oc's better than Asus, Dfi not far behind. Asus has more features on mobo. Intel Badaxe looks good also. Not many to choose from yet.
    Only ddr2 ram will do.
    Advise i got on hd's when planning my build was that 2 hd's in raid 0 is as fast as a raptor, and cheaper.

    I won't do overcloking at start. But might play around at a later stage. Have to see what kind of cooling i get.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

    I went for Zalman CNPS59500 Led Cpu Cooler from ocuk. Not really needed until i start oc'ing but i like the blue led. its 1 of the best coolers and not that expensive.
    Mobo is your big decision. Dfi ive got clocks the best but you mightn't like the colour of it. Best clocker so far. Asus has loads of features...wifi, digital sound etc (note you have to either flash the bios or get new bios chip from Asus for conroe to work). Gigabyte oc's a little bit better than it. Intel badaxe would also be a good buy as it is supposed to be forward compatible with quad core. Take your pick.

    I thought NVIDIA had a beta driver out for the sli of 7950s, or quad sli as it is known? granted, "beta" should start alarm bells ringing if you plan to spend mucho cash on two high end cards.

    I have a one of these http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/akasa_evo120/index.shtml Not sure how good it is as i haven't pushed it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

    Looks good, but v big. will it fit in that case you thinkin bout gettin. might have 2 go for super-tower or get new cooler. If you running on stock for while cooler is not a big prob as it comes with fan & heatsink. Mobo is your biggest decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

    geez, are those stock coolers able to keep this thing in check? Is the bottom "card" blowing waste heat onto the underside of the next one?

    Maybe you should buy a smaller yet equally impressive card like a 7900GTX or X1900XT for half the price? Seeing as DX10 is out next year that card is going to lose an awful lot of its value.

    Do you run a dual monitor setup/have a 30" monitor? Otherwise the benefits of SLi (or single PCI-e SLi, as here) are outweighed by the cost.

    Buy a nice card now, and a really great one next year.
