Is a solar heating system worth it for a west (maybe SSW) facing house? does anyone know what the potential loss of effeciency is?

I too would like some advice. With a wood stove, the winter hot water and space heating seems to be taken care of (over 20 cm of insulation in walls and attic, 10 cm in floor planned), but what of the 60 % of annual hot water promised in the summer with solar vacuum tubes, say 4-6 square meters, be available on a west facing roof? would it be enough to fill a 400 litre tank to 70 degrees or so?

Hi There, you could doa search for solar panel in the sustainable energy Ireland. http://www.sei.ie. there is also information about other forms of heating etc which might have grants.

Have found out that you need to double the size of panels for an east west situation, with half on the west and half on the east side of the roof. But I think for a south west situation it may be better to have all the panels on the SW facing side of the roof, as it the panels would be mainly for summer use.
