    Hi all...

When a hard disk/storage device, that was working ok, is reported by disk management as being 100% free space and no file system present...what does this mean exactly?

Can any data be recovered? When i goto explore the drive, it says that is it not formatted...do you wish to format? I choose no of course. Is there anyway around this?

    Thank you

There could be a partition on it, Linux say for example but just cannot be read as it's not Microsoft compatable.

Can you give me details of what OS was originally installed and what PC specs it came from? e.g a 400GB drive going into a P3 500 just aint gonna work right at all.

Basically the file system is used to oraganize your data. Formatting will create a new one on the drive but erase all data.

Format drive and recover files with 'Ontrack easy recovery' hasn't failed me yet. If file system is corrupt and you don't want to chance a format get a Linux boot cd and copy files to network location or other drive.

where was the drive originally formatted ?

sometimes when you put a laptop drive in a different laptop / usb adaptop it gets upset because of addressing modes - LBA / Large and all that

    don't format the drive !!!

at the worst try fdisk /mbr
