Problem: Wireless optical mouse

Picked up a cheapie wireless optical mouse in Dunnes (Trust). everything works grand except for the wheel - turning it has no effect at all.

I've been on to Trust support and they're recomended that I install the latest intellimouse drivers. I've done this but it doesn't seem to make any defference.

In the control pannel it appears as a HID-compliant mouse. But there's no "advanced settings" tab under "properties" where you can specify if a wheel is present or not.

    Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not familiar with the mouse but not sure why they would recommend installing the Intellimouse software as that Microsoft's driver/control panel package for their mice.

The drivers for Trust mice (if any are available for yours) can be found at the link below there should be a product number written on the mouse somewhere or on the packaging telling you the correct model.

Yeah, I was a bit confused over the intellimouse drivers too. But I'd run out of ideas so...what the hey... :)

The Trust site doesn't have any drivers to download, it says that I should be able to use the generic drivers that already there.

    I'm using Win2K (SP4) on a Dell D600.

If theres anything I've learned about their products is never trust a Trust!

I'm not sure there is much else you can do, the standard HID Mouse driver should support scroll wheels unless there is something funky about the Trust implementation. You could try the trust site again and see if they offer WinXP drivers they should work on the Win2K box as well.

You could try going into the device manager and bring up the mouse properties and manually change the driver and see what options it gives if it has more than one HID Mouse driver, it's a bit of a long shot.

Frankly as was said above never trust Trust!

Logitech & Microsoft are in my own opinion the only two who actually give a dam about mice so you are better off buying one of their products.

I had a somewhat similar experience when I swapped my USB wheel mouse for a P/S2 mouse. Found this article which explains how to change a value in the registry to get the scroll wheel to work. Using Method 3 in that article worked for me.

edit: I was using Windows XP but it may work for W2K aswell.

If that doesn't work, try the mouse in a different PC or OS if possible and see if it works then. If not it's probably faulty hardware, and regardless it's not doing what's it's supposed to, so you should be able to return it - hope you kept your receipt :D

    Ta for the advice:

I've tried it on an XP machine - same result
I've tried the regedit Jor El mentioned - no luck there either.

Hmmm, time to find the receipt methinks...
