Athlone to Galway...

    Hi everyone,

I'm planning to cycle from Athlone to Galway next week and was wondering whether people have any advice in terms of road conditions, where to stop, what to avoid/be aware of and all that stuff. We're planning to get into Athlone at about 9 and then take it slow enough (58 miles in a day... hope we make it!). Also if anyone has any nice scenic routes they recommend instead of just going on the N6 for 5 hours that'd be great.

    Thanks. :)

Some friends of mine do Maynooth-Galway every year.
Loughrea is a nice enough stop, by the lake. Skip Ballinasloe as it is a hole, mabye stop in craughwell or something?

I'll second Loughrea. Picnic by the lake would be nice, provided you don't go on the bypass

Thanks for the feedback guys, the cycle is tomorrow so let's hope the weather is alright... I think a few stop offs in Loughrea and Craughwell sound great too!

edit: this is also a pretty strange question, but what's the route like in terms of altitude. Obviously Galway is pretty much at sea level but are there many big hills between Athlone and it? I'm hoping for downhill or flat for most of it!

Best of luck for the cycle!

    Hi Wheatln2,

Its been a while since I did this cycle but there are few hills I think between Ballinasloe and Loughrea and then again on the way to Craughwell but nothing too serious. From what I remember there is a couple of nice long downhill sections.

You could always go the back roads which would be quieter but I'm not sure how much this would add on to your trip, by back roads I mean going through Taughmaconnell direction.

    good luck with it anyway

Thanks vigos, yeah was looking at the map and wondering whether the northern option of the backroads would be more fun than the N6 but think it may be a bit too risky and time-consuming.
