Im heading to vegas tomorrow and I've got nothing.

    I have three cards:
    My personal Credit Card
A friggin muppit in a resturaunt cracked off the end (not the chip side) of it two days before I left. It works in shops etc, but I can't take anything out of an ATM with it.

    My personal ATM/Laser Card
This is a brand new card, and i only noticed a few days before leaving that there was no "cirrus" or "plus" on it. I rang the bank straight away, who couldnt figure out why the plus wasnt there, but informed me that all new cards automatically work. IT DOESNT friggin work.

    Business Credit Card
Again, only got this a few days before leaving, and for some reason its been declined.

So, I have no way of taking out money.... ****... hmmm...

can you use a credit card to buy chips in the casinos?? and even if they do... they prob wont accept a cracked card.

anyone got any bright ideas of how to get around this?

I don't know which other banks offer it, but if you're with AIB you could always transfer money online/24 hr banking into a friends account and cash it out using their ATM card (providing they've a working one there).
I'm sure you'll be able to sort something out.

i presume you can buy travellers checks with a credit card. you could do it in the airport. commision might be steep though

    Takes 3 days.
Have you rang your CC company? they should be able to sort something out. I think the BOI in the arrivals dept is open Saturdays too.

I think if you report your card damaged when you get there, your bank should sort out a replacement for you but I dont know how this works or how long it takes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,053 ✭✭✭jimbling

Im actually in the states now.. so no chance of getting a replacement really.

I did ring the bank but was told there was no way of getting a replacement cc so quickly. He told me I was better off bringing the cracked one because it does work with chip and pin (if they accept it)

I will be on my own in vegas, so no friends ATM im afraid.

I thought about transfering money to a westernunion, but the max is 999 and theres prob a fair charge for that too.

I'm gonna head over to the airport and try buying dollers with it there.... in my panic I had forgotton about that. :D

Maybe westernunion? I've never used these people but they might help.

"Need to send money? Whether you prefer to send cash at a Western Union® Agent location or use your credit or debit card to send money online or by phone at 1800 395 395, the choice is yours. "

So maybe you can ring an Irish western union place and use your CC over the phone to get money sent to yourself.

jimbling, scrach wertern union. Can't you just go to a casino and get a load of chips with your CC (get them to type in the number manually as the strip doesn't work), then go and cash it out, halving or doubling it at roulette as required.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭Fatboydim

Don't whatever you do buy chips with a CC. They will do it but they will charge you an absolute fortune for the privilage. I think it's something like 20%. Western Union won't work either as you have to have someone in Ireland walk into the shop and send you the money. You can't do it from the USA. I know all this for a fact as I had to raise my buy in for the WPT by visiting an ATM and withdrawing the max each day. A bank or wire transfer will work but that takes a max of five working days.

Get to any bank with your passport and credit card and they will give you a cash advance over the counter. Some hotels will provide this service through their bureau de change. Ask your concierge.

mmmm.......could well have been TRUE at the time.

STEP: 1 Call FEXCO, Western Union's Representative in Ireland

From Ireland, call our toll free number 1800 395 395 (08.00 to 23.00). We do not accept transactions initiated outside of Ireland.

    STEP: 2 Give Your Information

Give the operator the receiver's information and amount you want to send.

STEP: 3 Give Your Payment Information

Give the operator your Ireland based Visa®, MasterCard®, or Laser® credit card number to complete the transaction.

The operator will verify your information and give you a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN).

Please note, credit card transactions cannot be made from mobile or public telephones.

Some credit card transactions may take longer to verify and require Western Union to call the sender back.

Additional fees may apply for telephone money transfers.

STEP: 4 Obtain Your Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN)

Be sure to write down the MTCN and share it with the receiver. The receiver may use this number to pick up funds, but it is not required. You will also need this number to track the status of your transaction.

    STEP: 5 Check the Status

To track the status of your transaction, you can check the Order Status online.

    STEP: 6 Check Status

To obtain the status of your money transfer, you can check the Order Status online.

    Restrictions and Special Notes:

    Sending from Ireland:

For amounts of 1,000 EURO or more, senders must present either one form of primary identification or two forms of non-primary identification one verifying name and the other verifying address.

i was just pointing out you dont need to physically walk into a western union branch to send money.

besides this wont help the op much so now back on topic :)

No but you need to physically be in the country where your account is held. And that's the point. This was only last month for Crissakes and information from Western Union direct.

Mandalay Bay wanted to charge $500 to put $10k on CC. It's five percent. It just felt like more. I still think it's a lot. Though other casinos might be more reasonable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,053 ✭✭✭jimbling

    okay... panic over, thank god.

none of the exchanges would accept it, and the bank at the airport wouldnt either.

Finally found a wells fargo ATM that has a swipe rather than a slot. worked fine on this. I assume there'll be plenty of these around if ya look for them.
nice one for all the help guys.

im in a similar situation! I managed to forget my neteller PIN no (I know it begins with a 4!). Is there anyone in Vegas with access to $2k in cash? I can transfer the money on stars or Neteller, ill pay any fees obv and pay for a good dinner. I can transfer the money on to my visa card but that takes around a week or so.
