ok ill start with the basics
I was cleaning dust out of my heatsink during the week, and when i was putting back on my fan i managed to break a bit off it,so turned on pc anyway, couldnt get windows to load,so decided to reinstall windows,no luck, nothing working,so i had to disable all the cache's and finally got to reinstall windows, turned back on all my cache's,and now my pc is running like a 400mhz machine with 32megs of ram, any idea's on how to fix it?
    and i know i need a new fan :P
    thanks
    chris

I'm unclear what you damaged. Was it the fan/heatsink or the chip?

How much ram and what speed was your computer running at before you tryed to repair the machine ? Like the other poster i find your post unclear.

I'm only taking a wild guess but I'm thinking other BIOS settings have got messed up.
FUll system spec and a thorough description of the prob are going to be needed though.

    :)

When you reinstalled XP did you install the mainboard and graphics drivers? Failure to do this often results in a crawling display.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS values to default incase you messed with something you shouldn't have? I think you may have knocked something out of place when you were at the heatsink. You could try Microsoft Bootvis, it will analyse your boot up and might help you get faster boot times.

i installed all normal drivers and updated them as i went along

yes i reset my bios just incase i messed something about
i just cant understand how a problem with the fan can mess up the rest of pc whens its still running at the same temp. give or take a few degree's

welll even though there are updates for the motherboard XP should be able to get you up and running at a more than adequate speed. You mentioned you damaghed the fan? I've seen cases (on earlier Intel) whereby a damaged fan resulted in a much reduced performance across the board. I'm thin king that may the case here. If it is I wouldn't consider using the PC again until you've replaced the fan and i'd check that there is still some heat conducting thermal paste present on the heatsink.

theres no heat conducting thermal paste on my heatsink, i had a fan, like literally a big proper fan onto my cpu to cool it down more and it still operated the same,so im not sure if the fan is the problem, if i open certain mp3's the pc will play a different one,and even skip thru them, like play 5 seconds of a song and then play a random different song, its the same with video files, and some applications are not working?
