Should I wait...

I was looking at prices online today on komplett.

For about 1,200 I could get an Amd x2 4200+, 2gigs of crucial ram, 7900gt with all the other stuff I'd need, case, mobo, psu, etc. Do you lads think its worth it at the moment, or should I hold off for awhile unitl prices drop even more? My Pc at the moment is fine for games so I'm not in an overly huge rush, but I am a pretty big gamer and my current setup is getting a bit long in the tooth (brief outline below) so I do want to change it relatively soon. Any thoughts on going for the X2 over a Pentium D? Conroe is totally out of my reach, can't afford it, no doubts about that. I was also thinking of just changing my 256mb x800 for a 7600gt/gs to keep me going for a few more months...so again, I can wait, but how more more will current prices drop do you think?

I'd pretty much be looking to spend 600+sell my current pc (3.4ghz, 1.5gig, 256mb x800) to make up the difference, so 1,200 would really be my maximum.

If i was getting a totaly new system i think i would wait until early next month and c what komplett have then. Prices are coming down and by next month we should c intel chips in greater supply.

Wait till early-mid August, Conroe will surely kill some amd prices :D

Are you stuck with a mobo with AGP or do you have pci express?

If you have PCI express just slap in a better dacent gfx card.
(you will get another solid year/ year + 1/2 of gaming out of your rig)

Core2 Duo should definitely be within your reach a Core 2 E6400 is generally faster than an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ & cheaper.

    If you want to wait for Komplett;
    Core 2 E6400 - €225

All you need then is a compatible motherboard and get some [PC-5300] DDR2-667, you can use DDR2-800 only with the 965 chipset but DDR2-800 is still hard to come by and the performance difference isn't that great between the two.

As for GPU's ATI are prepping a new X1900GT so don't know whether to wait or not but the 7900GT is a good card anyway.

Eh, if you have 1200 to spend you can definitely build a conroe rig.

I'm getting a PSU, Case, Ram, mobo, gfx, Conroe E6600 and HD for around €1100 and its all top quality stuff.

Hasn't that been out a while?

It's actually a new RV570 GPU tailor made not just cast offs like the current X1900GT but supposedly they are going to retain the X1900GT name which isn't a great idea I think.

Now whether it is any faster to better compete with the 7900GT is the the important question nobody has the answer to yet.

Edit: According to rumours mid August around the 20" or so will see the launch of the X1650XT(Pro), X1950XT(X) and (newer) X1900GT if it still has that name but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess they go with X1950GT. However if this new X1900GT is no faster than the current X1900GT then the no name change policy starts to make sense.

    It's pci-e.

Good stuff about the Conroe - I dunno why but I had an idea in my head it was much more expensive then it is!

Guess I might wait a while after all....if I can avoid the temptation of a new pc that is. :)

    Thanks lads, appreciate it.
